result of low enrollment
and budget defi cits.

Queens Students participate in
“National School Walkout”
Students at Benjamin Cardozo High School and Bayside High School participated
in the “National School Walkout” against gun violence on March 14. Th e scheduled
protests occurred on the one-month anniversary of the Parkland, Fla., shooting
at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
Students spoke out against the Feb. 14 mass shooting, which claimed the lives of
17 teenagers and faculty members.
City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer also marched with students at Newcomers
High School in Long Island City. Archbishop Molloy High School in Briarwood
gathered for prayers to honor the shooting victims.
Forest Hills High School on
lockdown after shooting threat
Forest Hills High School went on lockdown on March 15 aft er a student made terror
threats that led to his arrest. Th e Queens teenager, Ishrak Hossein, 16, was ordered held
on $10,000 bond or $5,000 cash bail following his March 16 arraignment in Queens
Criminal Court. Police offi cers from the 112th Precinct and other NYPD units responded
to the school located at 67-01 110th St. aft er a student found a note scribbled on the
desk indicating another student had a gun.
Bayside hosts fi rst-ever St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Hundreds turned out for the St. Patrick’s Day parade down Bell Boulevard on March 24.
Irish spirit ran high with marchers in green, white and orange of the Irish fl ag; pipe and drum corps played music. About 20 community groups
participated in the parade, including local schools.
