MovieWorld shuts down to
make room for Lowe’s
Douglaston’s family-owned MovieWorld Th eater showed its last fi lm on July 2 to
make room for Lowe’s Home Improvement, according to the theater’s general manager.
Rumors that MovieWorld was shutting down emerged in January 2017 and
residents soon created an online petition to save the beloved theater.
Mailbox fi shing on the rise
in eastern Queens
Bayside, Little Neck and Douglaston residents were subject to a rash of stolen checks
this month and were urged to refrain from using blue USPS mailboxes. Police said that
thieves were stealing, washing and cashing these checks and advised residents to take
sensitive mail straight to the post offi ce.
Bayside residents push back against
incoming apartment complex
Hundreds of Bayside residents gathered in front of 214-10 15th Ave. to protest
an incoming four-story, mixed use building. Th e rally was spearheaded by the Bay
Terrace Community Alliance who cited safety and quality of life concerns as reasons
for the development not to be built. Developer Dun Xing Zhang submitted plans for
an 18-unit apartment complete with 5,320 square feet for a “community facility.”
Six LIRR Port Washington trains
shut down in ‘summer of hell’
Summer 2018 was dubbed the “summer of hell” and was marked by poor MTA and
LIRR service throughout the city. In July, six weekday trains on the Port Washington
LIRR line -- three in each direction -- were canceled from July 23 to Sept. 3. Service
changes were made to accommodate riders who were aff ected by the shut downs.
