Astoria woman confronts Arizona
senator at height of Kavanaugh hearings
Astoria’s own, Ana Maria Archila Gualy, was caught on camera confronting
Senator Jeff Flake about his lack of compassion for sexual assault survivors. In the
video which quickly went viral, Archila tearfully asks the senator to reconsider his
endorsement of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Kavanaugh had been publicly
accused of sexual assault by three women aft er his nomination.
Three babies stabbed during
Flushing daycare center rampage
In mid September, an unlicensed daycare facility in Flushing fell victim to a violent
attack. An ex-employee stabbed three infants and two adults at the daycare during what
seemed to be a psychotic break. Th e assailant, a 52-year-old grandmother of three from
China, told the Daily News she had no idea what came over her. During the attack she
said she didn’t see babies but instead wolves. She later said we hoped to make amends.

Two incumbent state senators
ousted in Democratic primaries
Th e two Queens state senators who were formerly part of the
Independent Democratic Conference (IDC) felt the wrath of Queens
Democratic voters during this year’s primary eleciotns. State Senator
Jose Peralta lost his bid for re-election to Democratic challenger Jessica
Ramos in the 13th District primary covering areas of northwest Queens.
On the opposite side of the borough, state Senator Tony Avella of the
11th District lost to former City Comptroller John Liu, who’s making a
bid at a major political comeback.
