STORY: Diner at an Astoria restaurant says receipt noted that
his cheeseburger came with spit inside
SUMMARY: Curtis Mays was at The Bohemian Hall and Beer
Garden at 29-19 24th Ave. celebrating Father’s Day with his
daughter and granddaughter and when it came time to pay
the bill, he noticed the receipt said that there was spit in his
 cheeseburger.
REACH: 13,751 people (as of 6/25/18)
 Why can’t we solve this?
When the first images surfaced on the news of immigrant children locked in cages
after being separated from the parents on the U.S./Mexico border by federal agents,
many in Queens were aghast and wanted answers.
Not all 2.2 million of us could board a plane to Texas to see the scene firsthand.
That’s why we have representatives in Congress, and fortunately, two of Queens’ voices
on Capitol Hill — Tom Suozzi and Grace Meng — made the trip there this weekend
 to get answers.
Both Congress members confirmed to us all that we’ve seen in recent weeks on the
news — young children desiring to be reunited with their parents, trained professionals
doing their best (under the circumstances) to care for these kids, and an overwhelmed
U.S. Border Patrol struggling to keep up with the demands of President Trump’s “zero
 tolerance” policy.
In their own ways, both Suozzi and Meng made it clear that the current situation
is unacceptable, and short- and long-term solutions are needed to fix our broken
 American immigration system.
But will anyone listen to them?
The Republican-led Congress has “tried” to pass immigration reform bills, but the
bills were defeated due to “poison pills,” thrown in by hardline Republicans, that
include restrictions on legal immigration. President Trump has all but punted on the
measure until after the midterm elections, and chances are he’ll punt again thereafter,
especially if the Democrats take Congressional control back.
We’ve had it with partisan rancor and poison pills. It’s time to get something substantial
 done.
In Queens, the most diverse county in America, we take this issue very personally.
We’re home to tens of thousands of immigrants who are here legally and illegally. Some
of our undocumented residents have been here for years, raised their own families and
contribute their skills for the betterment of our society and economy.
We need immigration reform; we’ve needed it for 30 years; we need it today. If
Trump won’t help get a deal done, then Congress should step up and do it without him
(at this point, they’re probably better off without his meddling).
So we urge you to contact Suozzi, Meng and the five other Members of Congress representing
Queens (Joe Crowley, Hakeem Jeffries, Carolyn Maloney, Gregory Meeks and
Nydia Velazquez). Tell them you want immigration reform that protects our borders
while also giving undocumented, law-abiding immigrants a chance to live in America
and contribute to our society without fear of being thrown in jail or deported.
And tell them to find whatever reasonable Republicans are left in the Capitol and
convince them to work together and get this done.
