A few weeks ago New York Cancer & Blood Services opened
its doors in Bayside. A tour showed me the most modern
facility with a comfortable tone.
I interviewed Dr. Trianta Fillos to find out more about this
brand new facility and its team of board certified specialists.
“It is so important to bring state of the art cancer care close to
home”, he stated “patients, no longer have to travel to Manhattan
when they can receive the same world class care right
here in their neighborhood. I have been treating patients from
Manhasset, Jackson Heights and Flushing for the past eight
years, I have great ties in Queens”. Born in Jackson Heights
and currently living in Whitestone has brought Dr. Fillos to
this brand new facility in Bayside.
His rotation in hematology in his third year of medical school
sparked his curiosity and perspective to investigate further.
Working with profiles, DNA Sequencing and identifying
markers began in the laboratory. By looking at cell cycles in
yeast, and how to block growth propelled him to graduate
with a degree in medical hematology and oncology, and so
began his career. “It starts at the bench and gets to the bedside”,
he stated. “Funding is critical.”
“Outpatient oncology is an expanding field, he stated”, with
the help of a support team after diagnosis is a key factor in the
treatment. Treatment approaches and technologies are constantly
changing, which can provide patients with an array of
medications, therapies and tools to attack the disease. Even if
two patients have the same cancer, they are given an individual
program to meet their individual needs. Each patient has
a Nurse, a social worker and the doctors to count on”.
“Queens is such a diverse borough he said, we needed to find
a way to speak in everyone’s language and make the patients
comfortable, we found a Language Bank which is just a
phone call away and each language is translated into that
patient’s language”.
He spoke about Immunotherapy. Some cancers invade the
immune system. New drugs can now treat malignant, metastatic
melanomas to provide hope, a different class of medications
prolonging life, meaningful long term life.
This brilliant, soft spoken doctor is in practice in Bayside
from 9 to 5 everyday, curing cancer and giving hope where
there once was none.
