Queens man busted with
real guns and fake cop gear
He wasn’t a cop, but a Rosedale man
arrested on May 31 had enough fi repower
and gear to play the role, police
said.
Kevin Nugent, 40, was busted following
a court-ordered search of his 254th
Street home linked to an ongoing police
investigation into drug-related activity.
Th is isn’t Nugent’s fi rst run-in with
the law, sources familiar with the investigation
said, as he was picked up just
last year for criminal impersonation. His
rap sheet also includes arrests for petit
larceny in 2012, two robbery counts in
2013 and an attempted robbery in 2014.
Following his criminal impersonation
arrest last December, according to court
records, Nugent had been released on
$10,000 bond; another court hearing on
that case is set for June 19.
Regarding the May 31 raid, law
enforcement sources said members
of the NYPD Queens South Narcotics
Division and Major Case Squad developed
information that led them to
obtain and execute a search warrant of
Nugent’s residence at 2:20 p.m. that day.
During the search, police found a
loaded .380 Ruger handgun and a loaded
Mossberg shotgun, along with 370
cartridges of ammunition.
Th ey also located and recovered two
ballistic vests and identifi cation cards
that NYPD offi cers typically use and
two fake police identities. One of the
vests had the letters FBI on the front,
while a shirt labeled “NYPD Counter
Terrorism” was also recovered.
Police also found in Nugent’s home
41 methadone pills and $2,230 in cash.
Nugent faces charges of criminal possession
of a weapon, possession of a
forged instrument, criminal possession
of a controlled substance and violation
of a local law. At his arraignment on
June 1, he was ordered held on $75,000
and must return to court on June 9 on
the matter.

Drunk driver gets up to 21
years for deadly pileup
A New Jersey man will be spending
up to two decades in a New York prison
for causing a deadly crash on the Grand
Central Parkway in Queens while driving
drunk last July.
Andrew Shakespeare, 34, of Roselle,
NJ, pleaded guilty in April to aggravated
vehicular homicide, Queens District
Attorney Richard A. Brown said.
Shakespeare was ordered on Monday,
June 4, to serve between 7 and 21 years
behind bars; following his release, he
must also have an interlock ignition
device installed on any car he drives for
a fi ve-year period.
Law enforcement sources said the
deadly crash occurred at 6:30 a.m. on
July 16 along the westbound lanes of
the Grand Central parkway near 188th
Street.
Prosecutors said Shakespeare was
operating a black BMW X5 SUV at a
high rate of speed, carrying several passengers
on board, returning home from
a wedding celebration.
As he attempted to pass a white Nissan
vehicle in the entrance lane, Shakespeare
side-swiped the car, then lost control of
the SUV, which set off the chain reaction
crash that involved two other vehicles.
Offi cers from the NYPD Highway
Patrol and numerous EMS units rushed
to the scene. Upon arriving at the scene,
paramedics found one of Shakespeare’s
passengers — Akeam Grant, 16, of
Brooklyn — lying on the roadway with
severe trauma about his body. He was
pronounced dead at the scene.
A second passenger, Brooklyn’s Layon
Campbell, 34, was found unconscious
behind the front passenger seat. Aft er
being extracted from the wreckage by
fi rst responders, paramedics rushed him
to a local hospital, where he was pronounced
dead.
Five others involved in the four-car
pileup were hospitalized with serious
injuries.
