They settled in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn. Soon afterwards, they opened a fruit and vegetable store on Knickerbocker Avenue. In 1955 Mom gave birth to Salvatore and in 1961 their 3rd son Giuseppe (Joseph) arrived. Between operating a fruit store and raising 3 young children, they also opened two other establishments, a butcher store and an deli on Vernon Blvd. in Long Island City. We all helped out at the family businesses. We were the stock boys, cashiers, clean-up crew and anything else they needed us to pitch in and help out. To this day customers still come in the office remembering the fruit store and Mom and Dad fondly. Things seemed different then. Most of Mom’s siblings and aunts and uncles lived within a few blocks of each other. We lived in our Nonno Sal and Nonna Rosalia’s six family house on Suydam Street and between my grandparents, our family and my aunts family, we occupied three of the the six apartments since my mom had five siblings. It was not uncommon to have 20 plus relatives over for Sunday dinner, which was always served at 2 pm and lasted several hours. By the mid 1960’s Dad decided to get out of the food business and went into the construction union . They also purchased an 8 family house on Stockholm St., in which we lived on the first floor. After purchasing other investment properties in 1969 we moved to a detached one family on 84th St. in Middle Village. It felt as if we had moved to the suburbs! It took a few weeks to get used to the quiet environment. Like many other communities in Queens, Middle Village had that old-town feeling. Some of that charm and character definitely still exists in Middle Village today. Fast forwarded to 1974, Salvatore Crifasi obtained his real estate salesperson license . Within 5 years, in 1979 he became a broker and opened up his own office on Metropolitan Ave. off Forest Ave. in Ridgewood. At that time, that section of Metropolitan Ave. was part of Maspeth and the area code was 212. That same year, Joseph Crifasi received his real estate salesperson license and also worked at that the office while pursing his Bachelor’s degree in Business at St. Francis College. In 1982, Crifasi Real Estate opened its second location at 79-45 Metropolitan Ave. In Middle Village. The following year we expanded the business by obtaining a NYS Mortgage Brokers License. In 1998, after 19 years, we relocated the Ridgewood office to its current location 62-70 Fresh Pond Rd. We expanded our market area to Williamsburg and Greenpoint with the opening of our Williamsburg Office in 2002. That was also the year that Salvatore’s oldest son Sal Joseph, decided to get his real estate license while pursing a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering. In 2003, we expanded our Middle Village office and added additional retail and residential spaces. Since 1974 Crifasi Real Estate has helped literally thousands of people attain the American Dream in every aspect of residential and commercial real estate. We provide professional services to our clients and customers with integrity and would appreciate the opportunity to provide you with the same.
