What sets Glendale, Queens apart from the rest is the tremendous sense of civic duty among many of its residents. Glendale has many wonderful qualities a beautiful housing stock, a lively main street in Myrtle Avenue, a sense of suburbia in the heart of Queens-- but the community pride here is unlike any other across the nation. If you want evidence of that, turn to the many organizations that Glendale residents over the years founded to lend helping hands to others near and far. The Kiwanis Club of Glendale, which recently celebrated its 60th anniversary, can be found all over the community at any time of year hosting charity events and raising funds to “serve the children of the world” (according to the Kiwanis International motto) and improving the community as a whole. When crime rose across the city during the 1970s, a group of Glendale residents resolved to help the NYPD protect the community by forming the Glendale Civilian Observation Patrol (GCOP). The unarmed patrol is now in its 40th year of service under a new name: the 104th Precinct Civilian Observation Patrol-- and it also serves Ridgewood, Maspeth and Middle Village. They help the 104th (Top) Assemblyman Mike Miller and the Glendale Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Precinct keep watch against graffi ti vandals and safeguard public events including parades. From local medical emergencies to even the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the Glendale Volunteer Ambulance Corps is there to respond to the needs of people in distress. There’s also the food pantry operated by Sacred Heart Church, which-- despite sounding a constant need for donations to help poor families in the area-- works diligently to put food on the table for whomever they can with whatever they’ve got. There’s also civic groups such as the Glendale Property Owners Association, where homeowners and tenants alike turn to fi nd assistance and information on matters of improving their community. The organization advocates for issues benefi ting the The 104th Precinct Civilian Glendale taxpayer, including better public transportation (the area doesn’t have a subway line) to major sewer projects. Glendale is also home to the offi ce of Community Board 5, a group of nearly 50 volunteer men and women who keep a pulse on major housing, zoning, infrastructure and other matters affecting Glendale, Ridgewood, Maspeth and Middle Village. Under the guidance of District Manager Gary Giordano, the CB 5 staff works with government agencies to address problems large and small around the area, from potholes to major fl ooding matters. It’s organizations such as these, and the people behind them, that have helped keep Glendale a wonderful place to live for so many years. The Kiwanis Club of Glendale holds a Christmas cheer party.
