FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.qns.com may 12, 2016 • TIMES 7 Glendale Lumber was founded in 1920 on Proctor Street (73rd Place) in Glendale, NY by Edward Wagner. This was just the beginning of what would become a family tradition. Ed Wagner ran the business until his untimely death in 1931. Ed Wagner’s son, Frank Wagner, took over a rising business and carried it throughout the 1930’s and into 1940’s. During this time Franks’s son John (a.k.a. Jack) started in the family business. Once World War II started Jack at the age of 18 was drafted and sent to Europe. After a decorated military career, which saw Jack receive many medals including 2 Purple Hearts, he was back at Glendale Lumber a ready to continue the business with his father. In 1953 Frank Wagner passed away and left the business to Jack. The 1950’s saw Glendale Lumber rise to new heights in the building material business. However, on June 17th, 1960 Glendale Lumber was hit with a huge setback. A fi re leveled almost the entire offi ce and warehouse, leaving the Wagner’s with almost nothing from which to rebuild. At the time, Jack’s two sons Jack Jr. (14) and Lance (10) saw the family business at a turning point. When Jack the elder asked them whether to rebuild or not, they both wanted the family business to continue. So, after much effort and expense, Glendale Lumber’s new showroom and warehouse opened for business in 1961. Now with even more space Glendale Lumber became one of the premiere suppliers in the New York Metropolitan area. Jack Sr. continued to run the business until he retired in 1970. After serving in Vietnam, Jack Jr. took over the business and in 1972 Lance came onboard after serving in the Navy. The two brother continued the business through the 1980’s and 1990’s. The 1990o’s saw Jack Jr. and Lance welcome their sons, Jack III and Lance Jr., into the business making them the fi fth generation of Wagner’s at Glendale Lumber. In 2002 Jack Wagner Jr. retired and Jack III pursued different avenues away from the lumber business. But that year also saw Lance’s other son, Michael Wagner, come on board to help run the business with Lance Sr. and Lance Jr. Glendale Lumber is now one of the oldest family run business in their trade, spanning into the fi fth generation. It has survived and fl ourished through many challenges, from the Great Depression and World Wars to a devastating fi re.
