8 APRIL 13, 2017 RIDGEWOOD TIMES WWW.QNS.COM District school students vote for tech upgrades BY ANTHONY GIUDICE [email protected] @A_GIUDICEREPORT More than 20 local schools in Council District 30 were each given $100,000 — for a total of $2.2 million — as part of Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley’s pilot program called “You Decide: Education Engagement Budgeting,” where students were given the chance to vote on how to spend the funds. “This project not only provides needed upgrades for local schools, but also gives students an opportunity to be engaged in a meaningful democratic process,” Crowley said. “This project empowers the school community in a new way. And when students and parents participate, they witness fi rsthand how their vote can make a diff erence.” In addition to the $100,000, the three schools with the highest levels of participation received extra funding. P.S./I.S. 113 in Glendale had 93 percent participation and won an additional $50,000. P.S. 91, also in Glendale, had 81 percent participation and was awarded an additional $30,000 in funds. P.S. 290 A.C.E. Academy for Scholars in Ridgewood had 78 percent participation to earn an additional $20,000. The winning projects for each school are as follows: Queens Metropolitan High School — upgraded bleachers; P.S. 113 — laptops; Maspeth High School — electrical/ duct work for existing kilns; P.S. 91 — laptops; P.S. 290 — computer science and coding lab; P.S. 49 — three sets of laptop carts; P.S. 229 — smart boards; P.S./I.S. 87 — electrical upgrade to enable technology; P.S. 71 — smart board/laptops; P.S. 58 — laptops; P.S. 68 — nine fl at panel smart boards, two smart tables and 25 laptops; Grover Cleveland High School — electrical upgrade in class rooms and smart boards; P.S. 153 — promethean boards; P.S./I.S. 128 — laptops; P.S. 97 — sound system in auditorium; P.S. 60 — laptops; I.S 73 — smartboards; I.S. 93 — smartboards and laptops; P.S. 88 — bathroom upgrades with new sinks; P.S./I.S. 119 — stage repairs; and P.S. 09 — playground equipment. Coca-Cola’s bottling plant in Maspeth is being put up for sale: report BY ANTHONY GIUDICE [email protected] @A_Giu9diceReport The Coca-Cola bottling plant in Maspeth is reportedly popping up on the market for more than $70 million. According to The Real Deal, the 7.3-acre bottling site located at 59-02 Borden Ave. is being put up for sale by the owner. The property is currently triple-net-leased to the Coca-Cola Bottling Company until it expires in three years. Sources informed The Real Deal that the owner, Kaymac Corporation, is interested in marketing the site as a potential development opportunity, and that it could sell for anywhere between $70 and $75 million. The two-story warehouse that is on the site was built in the 1950s, and off ers 316,200 buildable square feet, with 120,000 square feet of parking and loading space, The Real Deal said. Before the Coca-Cola Company leased the property, another soda company, Canada Dry, occupied the space for many years. The Courier has reached out to the Coca-Cola Company for a statement and is awaiting response. CURES updates Glendale Property Owners Civics United for Railroad Environmental Solutions (CURES) updated the Glendale Property Owners Associations (GPOA) during their monthly meeting on April 6, on what the group is looking to achieve going forward. CURES is continuing to try and get a seat on the MTA’s Permanent Citizens Advisory Committee, Mary Parisen, president of CURES, announced.
