After being elected to the 21st Council District in 2009, she became the fi rst Latina to ever hold an elected offi ce in Queens, proudly serving Corona, Elmhurst, East Elmhurst and parts of Jackson Heights. From a very early age, Ferreras gained a reputation for being a passionate community leader. At age 14, she served on the Corona Youth Council, which later led to a position as president of the Corona-East Elmhurst NAACP Youth Council. At 19, she began her professional career as the Beacon Director of P.S. 19Q, the nation’s most overcrowded school. Through this experience, she has fought to ensure that all children in her district receive the best education available. Among the many issues wherein she is actively involved, women’s issues remain a key cornerstone. As chair of the Women’s Issues Committee, she continuously strives to address a variety of important issues that affect women’s daily lives, such as human traffi cking and domestic violence. NAZNEEN “LUCY” HOSSAIN Second Vice President New York Community Bank/QCSB Nazneen “Lucy” Hossain was raised in Flushing. She attended Queens College where she majored in business management. Her banking experience started with Chemical Bank, which later merged with Chase Bank. In 1997, Hossain started working with New York Community Bank, where she began as a teller. As time progressed, she advanced several positions. Today she is branch manager/ second vice president and oversees three branches in Flushing. On February 3, 2011, Hossain was granted the Rising Star Award for excelling in both the professional fi eld and in services to the community. She enjoys being actively involved in the community. She has been a committee member of the Arthritis Foundation and Ozanam Hall Nursing Home since 2008. She is also a board member for the Queens Botanical Gardens. All three of her branches actively raise money for various charities. Hossain has over 20 years banking experience and remains committed to achieving success for her customers MARTHA K. HIRST and company. Executive Vice President, COO and Treasurer St. John’s University Martha K. Hirst serves as executive vice president, chief operating offi cer and treasurer at St. John’s University. She is responsible for a wide range of the University’s operational areas including business affairs, campus and conference services, enrollment management, global studies, information technology, marketing and communications and public safety. Hirst came to St. John’s in 2011 after 33 years in New York City government, where she worked closely with Mayors Koch, Dinkins, Giuliani and Bloomberg. Her varied management successes included more than eight years as commissioner of the Department of Citywide Administrative Services, a diverse and professional 2,000-employee agency supporting all city government departments in the areas of personnel and civil service, goods procurement, real estate, building and energy management. In addition, she served for six years as deputy Sanitation commissioner. Hirst led the team of Solid Waste Management planners and engineers that designed, secured regulatory approvals for and implemented the historic closing of the Fresh Kills landfi ll on Staten Island; she also oversaw recycling education and outreach programs for all New York City residents, businesses and other institutions. In the early years of her public service career, Ms. Hirst represented the administrations of Mayors Koch, Dinkins and Giuliani at the city council as a key member of the Intergovernmental Relations team. MARY TORRES Assistant Vice President M&T Bank A proven leader in business development, client relations and community outreach, Mary Torres is a shining star in both her professional business and local Long Island City communities. Torres successfully manages the M&T at Work Program for 34 retail branches and two commercial offices. She is comfortable addressing large and smaller audiences to provide them with quality information helping attendees better understand banking matters, debt and budget management, retirement or college planning. A master networker, Torres is consistently active in LIC and supports and refers local businesses. She maintains affiliations with Long Island City Business Women, Long Island City Partnership, the M&T Bank Resource Group for Women and Veterans; the Borden Avenue Veteran Residence CAB, Healthcare Choices Chairman of the Board, Executive Women’s Golf Association and is an alumni mentor for the University of Albany and St. John the Baptist DHS. Torres attended the State University of New York at Albany then completed her degree with Excelsior College. She is a proud Long Island City resident since 2009 and can be found walking her dog, Pepe, along Pier 1 at Gantry State Park. She also enjoys playing a round of golf at Forest Park Golf Course.
