Upstanders on the Move:
Safe Center of Long Island
BY JUDITH SCHWAGER
We are looking for-ward
to the next
few months of
finding ways to help many
not-for-profits reach their
goals. First up is The Safe
Center of Long Island. Their
mission is to “Restore Hope for
Victims of Abuse,” providing
an impressive host of services
for men, women, children and
the elderly. Because of the
disruption and trauma faced
by their clients, there is never
any charge for their services.
No needy victim is ever turned
away.
On November 18,
Lorraine DiFiglia, Assistant
Director of Education, will
be our guest speaker at our
monthly meeting. She will
help us learn more about
the Center’s programs and
shelter needs. One educa-tional
program, for example,
is an in-school workshop for
students to discuss bullying,
online safety and sexual
harassment, among other
topics.
Ms. DiFiglia’s program will
help us sharpen our efforts
to best help the Center. We
will hold a special drive for
The Safe Center of Long
Island in early December
and expect it to be one of
our most successful. Time
and date to be determined.
The Shelter’s needs include
household supplies, kitch-en
essentials, baby clothes,
sweat suits, etc.
The Upstanders are always
interested in expanding our
programs and education. We
welcome any suggestions or
recommendations for orga-nizations,
services or indi-viduals
that can increase our
understanding of their social
issues and needs. Please con-tact

Deliver Great Food
Drive Again!
Thanks to the generosity of our North Shore
Towers family, we collected and distributed
more than 1,200 lbs. of non-perishable food
to the Sid Jacobson JCC Food Bank. There, it is
provided to not-for-profits throughout Long Island.
Volunteers were stationed in the lobby of
each building on October 21 to collect dona-tions
placed in grocery carts. As carts were
filled, they were emptied into several cars and
driven to the JCC for collection.
Applause for all our volunteers who worked
so hard collecting, packing and driving pounds
of food to the JCC:
Building 1: Fay Nadel, Annelies Karp,
Arlene Kelvin, Eileen Butchen and Merle Levy
Building 2: Adele Birnbaum, Harriet
Rosengarten, Souzie Thau and Priscilla Smith
Building 3: Fran Gubernick, Barbara
Margolis, June Stelboum and Fran Gordon
It was wonderful to see so many people
eager to help. Resident Nancy Birnbaum
turned to one of the volunteers and said,
“Thank you for making it so easy for us” to
provide this much-needed food. We thank
residents like you, Nancy, who donated so
generously!
