48 North Shore Towers Courier n June 2016 From the BY HAROLD KRAININ Harold and Carol describe their 65- year marriage as “made in heaven,” because a sudden cloudburst drove 19-year-old Harold from the baseball fi eld where he had gone to avoid meeting Carol, a 16-year-old girl his mother thought was perfect for him. The Krainins have resided in Building # 1 for six-years. WRITE ON, HAROLD! After our third of three sons was born, my wife Carol was convinced that, both as a lawyer and as a father, I specialized. Our fi rst three boys were born three years apart, in the month of April. When unexpected number four came along, Carol and I decided to try adopting a female addition to our maledominated family. Thus, a period of intense research began. The new family project consisted of reading relevant literature, combing computer articles, analyzing the best agencies, where such a match as we had in mind could be found, and making interminable follow-up calls. Our investigation had us inquiring in New York, New Jersey, New England and Pennsylvania. We considered ourselves extremely lucky when a lawyer friend notifi ed us of a possible match in Suffolk County. We thought how coincidental it was that we were to have an initial interview in Shirley—a girl’s name. By the time the interview was arranged, we had compiled a list of essential considerations: her health, family history, feeding schedule, and we even had her name. We saw her, and she was beautiful and alert. We held her, and she was warm and cuddly. We fell in love immediately. Our decision was easy to make. We agreed that after she passed a thorough physical exam—by our doctor—we would go through with the adoption. That’s how Kaydee, a female German short hair pointer, became the female addition to our maledominated family. She lived with us for thirteen years before old age and ill health caught up with her, and she died. (Her name, by the way, stood for Krainin’s Dog.)
