22 North Shore Towers Courier n June 2016 Special Occasion Honorable Letitia James 2nd Highest NYC Elected Official Visits North Shore Towers By Felice Hanah North Shore Towers Political Action Committee (PAC), and Felice Hannah, Board Member and Chairperson, hosted a roundtable meeting with Letitia James, Public Advocate for the City of New York on Thursday, April 28, 2016. Public Advocate James—she prefers to be called “Tish”—serves as a direct link between New Yorkers and their government. When elected to the position in 2014, she made history as the first woman of color to hold a city wide office in New York City. Tish continues to be a trailblazer, as she advocates for children, women and New York City senior residents. Tish shared with NST residents an overview of her accomplishments; the major changes in the Foster Care System she’s brought about by instituting a multilingual hotline; reforming the Administration for Children Services (ACS) and holding the agency accountable through lawsuits; as well as advocating for universal daycare and supporting paid family leave. Ms. James is in the forefront protecting the rights of tenants from landlords, who wish to evict them in order to get market rate rent for their apartments. She continues to fight against wage disparity for women and recently released a report, “Advancing Pay Equity in New York City,” which lists five significant recommendations to removi remaining barriers in the wage disparity for women. With the support of Eric Ulrich, City Council Chair of the Committee on Veteran’s Affairs, Tish moved to dedicate an agency “fully dedicated to veterans in New York City.” Prior to being elected as New York City Public Advocate, Ms. James served on the City Council, Chairing the Sanitation Committee and improved the city’s recycling program to include “a revolutionary recycling program.” Tish graduated CUNY’s Lehman College and Howard University Law School. She served as an Assistant Attorney General and a public defender.
