20 North Shore Towers Courier n June 2016 BEING ECO-FRIENDLY OR HOW TO RECYCLE WISELY Downsizing from a house to an apartment makes you value space much more. I’m always thinking when I buy something, “Where will I put it?” or “How can I use it in a new way?” So recently, when I started to enforce my New Year’s resolution of purging belongings I no longer needed, I came across a box of edibles in the kitchen that I know you are most familiar with, especially around Passover: matzah. I was feeling very giddy because of my recent success in recycling, so I started to think, “What can I do with matzah that could salvage it, rather than eat it or throw it out?” You know matzah is the Jewish answer to tofu? You can do almost anything with it. I think I have come up with a creative list of utilitarian ways, in which you could use leftover matzah. Wintertime seems to offer the widest variety of opportunities. I’ll never get stuck in the snow again, if I keep a box of them in the car. I could strap them to my feet and use them as cross-country skis. A few under the tush could also make a wonderful makeshift sled. How about some traction under a tire? If I ever run out of clay in a modeling class, I can always soak a bit of farfel and get wonderful results. Can you picture Rodin’s “The Thinker” made out of matzah farfel? Stone is SENIOR MOMENTS by gloria beck good, but matzah is better. You can always eat your mistakes. I feel it can be just as much fun as tossing a Frisbee. My dog Bagel loved when I tossed matzah to him. He would leap into the air and catch it on the fly. Now that I think about it, somehow Bagel (chametz) and matzah don’t sound as though they belong together. Oh well! Passover was his favorite holiday and he never complained about my cooking like the rest of my family. You know, recycling matzah can’t be a new phenomenon. Possibly the white face powder used by the wives of the Pharaoh’s thousands of years ago was made of matzah flour and was discovered after the Jews were driven out of Egypt. You think those encrypted messages found in the ancient tombs were hieroglyphics? Nah just some old bumpy matzah left behind. I bet they’re still edible!
