NST Welcomes New Tennis Pro
He’s an Ace!
BY JILL DAVIS
The North Shore Towers Tennis Association
is pleased to welcome Alex Morris
as the association’s new tennis pro. To
get to know Alex a little, the NST Courier
sat down with him for a chat shortly after he
started at NST on April 1.
Although Alex is just in his 20s, he has years
of tennis under his belt. “I started playing when
I was about 7 or 8 years old,” Alex said. By
the age of 9, he was confident enough to enter
his first tournament. “I got my butt kicked,”
he laughed.
But, like getting to Carnegie Hall, becoming
a tennis pro takes practice, practice, practice.
He is now a PTR (Professional Tennis Registry)
certified coach for players up to the pro level
and for kids as young as 5-11 years old.
Alex comes to NST from The Woodmere Club,
where he worked under the guidance of Eric
Morales, one of the top-tier tennis coaches on
Long Island. While at Woodmere, Alex learned
a lot about court maintenance as well. “I helped
build a sixth tennis court at Woodmere,” he
explained. Alex has also brought his talent to
Christopher Morley Tennis in Roslyn where he
has led their junior tennis tournaments.
Now that he’s at NST, Alex is very enthusiastic
about bringing his experience to the tennis club,
and he also has some really interesting ideas
for the future. “One idea I have,” he said, “is to
develop a men’s and women’s clinic. We would
do group lessons to improve players’ techniques,
like volley, slices and serves. We could have ‘A’
and ‘B’ levels where they would play matches
against other clubs.” Another idea Alex has is
for a junior tennis camp. “Maybe we’d have kids
play at a set time just for them where they could
develop their skills,” he said.
It will certainly be fun to see how Alex’s ideas
evolve and, even more important, how he brings
new energy to the association. If you’d like to
meet Alex in person, be sure to attend the Open
Tennis Meeting on Monday, May 13, at 7:30pm
in the VIP Room. Alex will greet you with a
smile (and maybe give you a couple of tips on
your backhand). NST Tennis pro Alex Morris
