Holiday Stress Relief
If the holidays sometimes leave you feeling
overwhelmed and out of control you’re
not alone.
It may surprise you to learn that there
are many things you can do each day
to improve your well-being. It also
may also surprise you that many
of them are absolutely free.
1. Daily Journaling – The
process of journaling
gives stressful
thoughts a place
to live other than
your brain. Writing
in your journal
10 minutes before
you go to bed can help
relieve the stress of the
day and put you in a restful
state of mind.
2. Quality of Sleep – Don’t sacrifice
quality of sleep to keep up with the
increased demands of the stressful
holiday season. Lack of sleep often
leads to illness and emotional stress
– making it harder to accomplish everything
on your to-do list.
3. Physical Activity – Don’t just watch TV.
Get your exercise in, go for a walk or work
out. Physical activity keeps your mood and
immune system elevated and healthy.
4. Happy Tunes – Remaining in a blissful state
of mind is easier to accomplish when you
have a playlist; listening to music enhances
mood, gratitude, energy, focus, motivation
and inspiration.
5. Grateful State – Did you know that practicing
gratitude causes real changes in your brain
that can improve brain function and make
you feel better? People who express gratitude
on a regular basis are more ooptimistic and
make more progress toward their goals.
Just
Say No – The holidays can make
people feel out of control at the mercy of
tradition and expectations. You can take
control by not allowing them to control
you and saying “no” to events
and activities that cause you to be
uncomfortable or stressed. If what
you’re doing is causing holiday
stress, it’s time to do something
different.
7. Deep Breathing – Diaphragmatic
breathing is an effective
and simple method to overcome
stress and quiet your mind. It’s
also convenient since it can be
done where, any time. Taking
deep breaths relaxes your muscles,
relieves tension and helps
improve brain function.
8. Stay Connected – Invite
friends and family to in-person or
Zoom holiday get-togethers and make
it a priority to stay in touch with loved
ones. We’re all feeling the impact of celebrating
differently this holiday season.
Make it positive and creative.
