Now, Nelson’s cousin lives down the
street and her aunt is a few blocks away.
And Weisner’s family also came from Astoria
originally, going back centuries.
“It almost feels like we’re coming back to
our roots,” Nelson noted.
And that seems to be a theme that
echoes through their apartment: an homage
to where they came from, but also a
nod to where they want to go.
Their home is decorated in a way that is
uniquely them — unlike anything you would
find in an Ikea catalogue. They’ve managed to
weave together the most important things in
their lives and make it work in a cohesive way.
“Decorating was pretty collaborative,”
Nelson recalled, “and when our landlord
said we could paint, I was very excited
about that. Paint really makes me feel like
I’m at home.”
One wall of their spacious living room is
painted red with orange-y tones. It brightens
up the space and exudes a warm feeling
