FAMILY MARKET,
29-15 BROADWAY
Though not a restaurant, Family Market
on Broadway is the perfect replica of a
Japanese convenience store right in Astoria.
Offering a large selection of the alltoo
popular Pocky, Family Market is a great

place to pick up fun packs of Japanese
candy like speciality KitKat Bars (in flavors
like green tea!) and gummy candies —
which in Japan have an intense fruity flavor,
are individually wrapped, and offer unique
flavors like lychee and yuzu (try the brand
Kasugai). There are also plenty of authentic
specialty food items, like Kasugai (Bonito
flakes) — traditionally served on top of
Japanese savory pancakes — panko breadcrumbs,
matcha tea, ramen noodles, miso
paste and Asian beauty products. There is
also even a small refrigerated section with
traditional Japanese takeaway items like
onigiri (a Japanese “sandwich” with rice
and seaweed), mochi and dango — a Japanese
dumpling similar to mochi but served
on a stick.

TAMASHII RAMEN,
29-05 BROADWAY
Tamashii was one of the first restaurants
to bring Japanese ramen to Astoria, joining
the neighborhood in 2013. It follows the traditional
three components of Japanese ramen:
stock, noodle and “kaeshi,” a Japanese
flavor base often used in noodle soups. Try
the popular miso ramen, shio ramen (made
with mineral salt), or shoyu ramen (with soy
sauce). Despite its name, it isn’t all just ramen
here. If you’re starting off with something
light (which maybe you should; we
have a long way to go!), try the pork bao
buns or the takowasa — a broiled octopus
appetizer.
