Mohawk Code. A little off
beat but this code protected
shipments during WWII. The
94 year old Louis Levi Oakes,
the last Akwesasne Mohawk
code talker from World War
II died and laid to rest at the
St. Regis Mohawk Reservation
in northern New York.
Oakes was among 17 Akwesasne
Mohawks awarded the
Congressional Silver Medal in
2016 for their service as Native
American code talkers in the
U.S. military, according to the
tribe. Code talkers communicated
U.S. military coded
messages based on their native
language, which proved
impossible for the enemy to
crack.
JFK Runway. Progress
continues on the construction
of JFK Runway 13L, and
nearby taxiways. When work
is completed, the improved
taxiways will benefi t the two
new cargo facilities being
built on the North Cargo area
one by Air Cargo LLC and
other by Aeroterm.
President and CEO William
Flynn will retire from
Atlas Air on January 1. 2020
after 13 years. He will become
Chairman of the Board.
Flynn’s successor will be
Dietrich who will become
President and Chief Operating
Offi cer effective immediately,
and he will retain the role as
President when he assumes
the role of Chief Executive Offi
cer in January.
Qatar Cargo signs deal for
fi ve B777Fs valued at $1.8bn
with Boeing. It currently operates
23 freighters, including
16 Boeing 777 Freighters, fi ve
A330Fs and two B747-8Fs.The
latest freighter 777 Freighter
ordermakes this Boeing aircraft
of the backbone of Qatar
cargo fl eet.

Airways has today signed
this landmark order for fi ve
new Boeing 777 Freighters to
add to our cargo fl eet,” said
Akbar Al Baker, CEO, Qatar
Airways Group.“It will increase
our 777 freighter fl eet
by a full 20%, enabling us to
further develop our business
and offer new customers the
chance to experience a truly
fi rst-class logistics service.”
Women in Cargo. Emirates
SkyCargo, the air cargo division
of Emirates Airline, has

announced the appointment
of Alyazeya Saeed and Fatma
Ahli to the key positions of
Cargo Managers of Oman and
Kuwait. Coming from Emirates
SkyCargo’s Commercial
Management Program, the
two Emirati women will oversee
the airline’s cargo operations
in the two countries.
June 20 produced an important
agreement with the
potential to speed up crossborder
supply chains implementing
an existing agreement
to expand pre-clearance
operations between the U.S.
and Canada – which would include
cargo.
The 2015 Agreement on
Land, Rail, Marine and Air
Transport Preclearance allows
for U.S. and Canadian
border offi cers to clear people
and goods at sites within the
country of origin, covering
air, land and marine traffi c.
Currently, pre-clearance operations
consist of U.S. Customs
and Border Protection offi cers
screening U.S.-bound passengers
traveling from nine major
Canadian airports, several
ferry lines and one rail station.
PayCargo simplifi es the
payment process for the industry’s
fastest cargo movement.

Taxing Proposals. Dutch
government announcing
plans for a new tax on air
cargo and air travel. The bill
is part of efforts by the Dutch
government to charge consumers
and businesses for
environmentally polluting
behavior. The Dutch government
has submitted proposals
to introduce a charge of
$4.37 per ton of cargo for noisier
planes and $2.19 per ton
of cargo on quieter aircraft
from January 1, 2021. Passengers
will be charged at a rate
of 7 per departure. The Dutch
government said it would prefer
the introduction of a European
wide tax on aviation but
insuffi cient progress is being
made.
MENZIES warned that
earnings would remain fl at
in 2019 as the servicing company
battles weak cargo volumes
and cuts in fl ight schedules
dropping shares down
21%.European airlines have
warned of a challenging market
in terms of passenger
numbers, while cargo volumes
are also stagnating.
“The overall aviation market
is having a diffi cult year.
This inevitably is having an
impact on our full year outturn,”
said Chief Executive
Offi cer Giles Wilson, the former
fi nance offi cer who was
promoted this year.
Swiss WorldCargo will
now use CSafe RAP active
temperature-controlled containers
for its wide-bodied
aircraft fl eet. The CSafe RAP
utilizes ThermoCor Vacuum-
Insulated Panels technology
with a compressor-driven
cooling and radiant heating
system.
The cargo chamber can
manage four standard US pallets
or fi ve Euro pallets, and
includes an extended battery
life or more than 120 hours.
Expect these to be used at
JFK through WFS.
Cargo Health. The latest
fi gures from IATA have confi
rmed air cargo continued
to face weak market conditions
in May. Data from the
airline association show that
demand, measured in freight
ton kilometers (FTKs), decreased
by 3.4% in May compared
with the same period
in 2018.This was a slight improvement
on the 5.6% contraction
in April and IATA
said that the low point of this
cycle may be behind the sector.
IATA said that the air
cargo demand has suffered
from “very weak global trade
volumes and trade tensions
between the US and China”.
Brexit News. The UK government
has made two key
logistics appointments as
it looks to deliver its Brexit
commitment to fi nd workable
alternatives to the Northern
Ireland backstop when
Britain leaves the European
Union (EU).
Peter MacSwiney, chairman
of Customs clearance
software provider ASM, has
been appointed to a new Technical
Alternative Arrangements
Advisory Group, set
up by the Department for Exiting
the European Union to
explore options to replace the
Northern Ireland backstop by
the end of 2020.
The advisory group consists
of 15 technical experts in
Customs and trade from both
the public and private sectors,
and academia.
ASL Aviation Holdings
and Boeing signed a memorandum
of understanding
covering twenty 737-800 Boeing
Converted Freighters
(BCF), raising the Next-Generation
737-800 freighter conversion’s
order and commitment
count to 120 from eight
customers. The agreement includes
10 fi rm orders and 10
purchase rights.
