Katz ahead by 20 votes
BY QNS
Just 20 votes separates public
defender Tiffany Cabán and Borough
President Melinda Katz in
the recent Democratic primary for
Queens district attorney. This close
margin automatically triggers a recount.
This was the result of counting
the 6,337 paper ballots uncounted
from the day after the election. afternoon,
The BOE will re-tallied votes
from the machine scanners starting
Thursday morning as part of
a normal recount process that occurs
after every election. Cabán
campaign manager Luke Hayes,
joined by Van Bramer, showed up at
the Maspeth voting machine facility
Wednesday morning to observe
the recount only to leave because it
won’t start until Thursday.
This includes 3,556 absentee and
military ballots from Democrats, as
well as 2,781 affidavit ballots from
both parties that need to be sorted,
the BOE said. The paper ballots
can’t be counted until July 3.
With nearly all of the scanners
counted, Cabán clung to a narrow
lead as of 11 p.m. Tuesday night.
While Cabán declared victory in
front of her supporters, Katz declined
to concede, telling supporters
at her party that she would wait
until all the votes are counted. This
all flip flopped by a sliver with the
edge by Katz as of July 4th.
Late Tuesday night, Katz vowed
to her supporters they “are doing
a recount.” The Board of Elections
said an automatic recount would
only occur if there’s a margin of victory
of less than half a percent once
all the paper ballots are tallied.
Seven candidates seeking to succeed
DA contender Melinda Katz
the late Queens District Attorney
Richard A. Brown were on the
ballot in the first meaningful race
for this office in nearly three decades.
The primary winner moves
on to the November general election
and will be the prohibitive favorite
to win in this heavily-Democratic
borough.
The candidates included Queens
Borough President Melinda Katz;
public defender Tiffany Cabán; retired
Judge Gregory Lasak; former
Civilian Complaint Review Board
Chair Mina Malik; and attorneys
Betty Lugo and Jose Nieves. City
Councilman Rory Lancman was on
the ballot even though he formally
dropped out of the race on June 21
and endorsed Katz.
The primary election held today
was marred by low turnout early,
according to reports from QNS reporters
who visited polling stations
this morning. The weather
improved during the afternoon
around Queens, and that may have
increased participation in the waning
hours of the election.
