VIP speakers promise opportunities and a good future
The Aviation High
School in Queens, with
an annex at JFK Airport,
held its 116th Commencement
Ceremony on June
24 celebrating 83 years of
excellence in aviation.
The event was held
in their huge hangar off
Queens Boulevard filled
with hundreds of graduates,
families, former
grads, friends and supporters.
Port Authority Property
Manager Laura Garland
was chosen as Person
of the Year. She had
nothing but great things to
say about the future these
young people were about
to embark. She was accompanied
by her husband
who is also a graduate of
AVHS and also works at
JFK Airport. Aviation ties
run deep with her family
and other that attended
the graduation.
Of particular high note
was the awarding of six
Port Authority Laura Garland, Aviation High School (AVHS) Person of the Year, with Vaughn College

Vaughn College 4 year scholarship during the 2019 AVHS 116th Graduation Commencement Ceremony.
Each student has the potential of a Port Authority internship after graduating Vaughn.
4-year scholarships provided
by a partnership
between the The Port Authority
and Vaughn College.
In addition, these
students are guaranteed
an internship at the Port
after graduating.
The speakers stage
was filled with many
graduates who have excelled
in their careers.
They took turns awarding
various scholarships and
Toolboxes to the graduates.
These Toolboxes are
a reference to the actual
toolboxes students are required
to have while in
school.Now they are symbolic
and are different
types of recognitions such
as gifts of equipment, financial
aid or other tribute
generally contributed
by former students
or airline partners such
as United, Delta, Jetblue,
NYPD Aviation Unit, and
many other companies.
