Market is celebrating its
Opening Day. Starting on May
6 and running until Nov. 18,

Library is hosting a Kickoff to
Kindergarten event in order
to help parents and their children
prepare for the upcoming
school year. From 10:30
a.m. to noon, children will learn
the skills they need for the start
of kindergarten. The course is
about eight weeks long, but only
once a week. Library staffers will
show parents, caregivers and children
how to use games, handson
activities and stories that help

17 Enjoy a blue cocktail
while learning about
indigo history, techniques and
more at the Evening Cocktail
and Craft event at the Queens
Botanical Garden. Each participant
will be testing out shibori
techniques on handkerchiefs
before dyeing them blue and taking
them home. Adults 21 and
older are allowed to participate.

18 Join the NYC Compost
Project in order to lend
a hand at their urban farm.
From 9 a.m. to noon, volunteers
will learn how composted food
scraps nourish the soil. You will
also find out how to foster a
farm ecosystem and grow healthy
crops. Weeding, harvesting, processing
food stamps, planting
activities, building a compost pile
or sifting finishing compost are
some other tasks that may need
to be helped with. Volunteers
must be 16 years old or older. For

held at the Queens Botanical

You know spring is officially here when the Valley Stream Spring Carnival is
in town. Starting on Wednesday, May 2, and going on until Sunday, May 6,
the Valley Stream Spring Carnival will be featuring midway rides for all ages,
games and favorite fair food. The event is free of admission, while unlimited
ride wristbands are $25 on Wednesday only. Ride tickets are $1.50 each,
$25 for 20 tickets, or $50 for 50 tickets plus one free ride. Rides take three or
