ST. FRANCIS PREP ART DEPARTMENT CONTINUES TO IMPRESS
On Saturday, May 12th,
St. Francis Prep’s Art
Department will present its
annual Spring Arts Festival. This
event showcases hundreds of
students. Prep holds the distinction
of being recognized by the Middle
States Association of Colleges and
Schools by earning their Program of
Distinction in Visual Art. According
to Middle States, “The Visual Arts
Program of Distinction identifies
programs of superior quality, clearly
articulated and comprehensive,
led by qualified and talented
instructors using research-based
instructional techniques and
strategies, and allows all students
to develop an appreciation for and
an understanding of the visual arts
as a valuable and expressive fine art
form.”
The theme of this year’s show is
“SFP ComiCon,” which will highlight
comics and Pop Art. The show
will begin at 11AM, and there will
be premieres of student films in
Prep’s auditorium. Then at noon,
the student gallery will open in
the school’s state-of-the-art Art
Education Facility. At 1PM, Prep’s
performing Arts program will take
the stage in the school’s auditorium.
Other highlights include tables of
student art, photo booths, face
painting, Music provided by Prep
students and alumni, and student
designed fashion. Student artwork
will be raffled, and there will be a
demonstration table with acrylics.
The evening will conclude with
the induction of approximately 90
students into Prep’s chapter of the
National Art Honor Society.
Tickets are only $5 for the whole
day, and are availbale at the door,
or in advance in the Art department
office at Prep.
In addition to the upcoming Art
Show, Prep students have again,
been recognized nationally. Prep
Art Students exhibited their
artwork at the Congressional Art
Competition. Since this competition
began in 1982, more than 650,000
high school students throughout
the United States have participated.
On Saturday April 14th, five Prep
students showcased their artwork
at the Queens Museum of Art.
Each student was recognized
and received an award from
Congresswoman Grace Meng.
Mofan Chen, Alanah Durant, Gina
Licalzi, Mariana Papadopoulos and
Isabella Perna attended the award
ceremony.
We are ecstatic to announce that
SFP Senior, Mofan Chen, was
the winner of the Competition.
Mofan is invited to attend a special
unveiling reception in Washington,
D.C. in mid-June. He will be flown
to the Nation’s capitol. His work will
be displayed as part of a yearlong
national exhibition in the Cannon
Tunnel, in the U.S. Capitol. As the
winner, Mofan will also be offered a
scholarship to the Savannah School
of Art and Design.
