The All-Stars helped staff members and tutored younger students at P.S. 18, among other locations. Before the school year ended, the youngsters were honored at with a special breakfast, during which they received certifi cates recognizing their achievements. Van Buren senior makes a positive impact on others Mehreen Shah, a graduate of Martin Van Buren High School in Queens Village, served as the positive behavior intervention and support offi cer in the school’s Student Organization. In this role, she helped distribute rewards to students for good behavior and academic marks. Additionally, she served as a tutor at P.S. 18 and assisted her chemistry teacher, Monika Vora, in educating students and grading papers. The Richmond Hill resident completed her fi rst two years of high school in Pakistan before coming to America and attending Van Buren. She will attend St. John’s University and hopes to pursue a career as a physician’s assistant. These graduates are heading to CUNY medical school Derek Hodge and Sabrina Ariot, graduates of Martin Van Buren High School in Queens Village, are entering this fall the CUNY Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education. This seven-year program will lead them on the path to graduating with medical doctor degrees as general practitioners. Both Hodge and Ariot achieved high marks at Van Buren and participated in a number of organizations including ARISTA, the Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society, the Student Government and the Yearbook Committee. Cambria Heights students are reaching higher through high-tech School counselor Lenore Krieger and senior Mario Stevens at the Business, Computer Applications and Entrepreneurship High School at the Campus Magnet Complex in Cambria Heights are pictured holding up “#ReachHigher” signs in support of fi rst lady Michelle Obama’s College Signing initiative. The program promotes students who sign an agreement to attend the college that accepted them. Elmhurst graduate scores an ACE grant for college Amarfi Collado, who recently graduated from Pan American International High School in Elmhurst, recently received an ACE Grant and a scholarship totaling $41,300 to pursue a degree at St. Joseph’s College. Collado, who came from the Dominican Republic, was the valedictorian of her class and member of the school’s chapter of ARISTA.
