Exp. 7/31/16 CUTLER’S LIGHTING CUTLER’S LIGHTING at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, with many Queens Democrats taking to Twitter to share photos and reactions from the four-day celebration. Clinton had previously secured the majority of delegates needed to win the nomination outright in the primary process, but the delegates’ roll-call vote on July 26 made her nomination official. Many of Queens’ female elected officials were present at the convention. They include Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, who is the third consecutive woman to serve as Queens’ top elected official. Beginning with Claire Shulman in 1986 and continuing with Helen Marshall in 2001, women have held the Queens borough president’s seat for three decades and counting. “Perhaps our world will evolve into a better place now that the ability and talent of women has reached a long awaited pinnacle,” Shulman told QNS. “I wish Hillary well and look forward to her successful leadership of our wonderful country and the free world.” The leader of the Queens County Democratic Party, Congressman Joe Crowley, addressed thousands of delegates on the floor of the Wells Fargo Arena in Philadelphia shortly after the roll-call vote. He recalled how Clinton, then the junior senator from New York, worked closely with him and others following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to help heal a broken city while also ensuring that those who suffered in the disaster received the treatment they needed. “She understood the pain my family, our city, our nation were under. She fought to help our city rebuild. And she delivered,” Crowley said. “People forget, but the assistance package that was first proposed didn’t have a dime for New York. Hillary helped turn that around — securing $20 billion we needed to get New York going again.” Congresswomen Grace Meng and Nydia Velazquez also addressed the crowd during the convention on topics related to the Democratic Party platform and to rally the troops to support Hillary Clinton’s candidacy. Following an address by her husband, former President Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton addressed the convention crowd via satellite and addressed “any little girls out there who stayed up late to watch,” stating that while she may become the first woman president, “one of you is next.” Hillary Clinton will formally accept her party’s nomination for president in a speech on July 28 to close out the convention.
