Ground spraying to kill mosquitoes The New York City Department of Health is looking to prevent mosquitoes with the potential to carry the Zika virus from spawning in Queens by spraying pesticides in parts of College Point, Flushing and Whitestone. The Health Department will spray pesticide from trucks in those parts of Queens on Thursday, July 28, between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. the following morning, weather permitting. According to the Health Department, the boundaries of spraying will be Flushing Bay to the west; Northern Boulevard to the south; Union Street, 143rd Street, 147th Street and Whitestone Expressway to the east; and East River to the north. These neighborhoods are being treated with adulticide due to a significant presence of Aedes Albopictus, or Asian Tiger mosquitoes, in traps set by the Health Department. To be clear, Zika virus has not been found in any mosquito in New York City, the Health Department announced. The spraying is part of the Health Department’s three-year, $21 million plan to protect New Yorkers from Zika. The department remains cautiously optimistic that Zika virus will not be found in mosquitoes in New York City. Anthony Giudice Signs point to safer Flushing Pedestrians should be walking safer now that new speed humps and traffic signs have been installed throughout northeast Queens. Councilman Paul Vallone gained support from Queens Community Board 7 in Flushing, the Broadway-Flushing Homeowners Association and the Bowne Park Civic Association, in order to make the following enhancements. He requested three speed humps from the Department of Transportation (DOT), which were placed along 32nd Avenue between 155th and 159th streets in Bayside. Vallone expressed his concern about the dangerous roads in northeast Queens in a press release: “The safety of our children and their families is always a priority,” he said. “For too long have the residents of northeast Queens dealt with a dangerous situation at Bowne Park, lacking even a single crosswalk to safely cross 32nd Avenue into the park. These speed humps will go a long way towards improving their safety and I look forward to continuing to work with the DOT and our civic organizations to determine what additional measures can be implemented.” Additional traffic signs have also been placed at the following intersections in Flushing: Linden Place at 31st Road, Linden Place at 32nd Avenue, Linden Place at 35th Avenue, Northern Boulevard at Union Street, Northern Boulevard at Parsons Boulevard, Francis Lewis Boulevard at 29th Avenue and Francis Lewis Boulevard at 35th Avenue.
