Shanelle Davis of Jamaica, Clarence Kong of Bayside and Fazeel Sarmad of Flushing are three out of six New York City students who have been chosen as Milken Scholars for 2014. The three Queens students, along with the other recipients, were honored at a recognition ceremony and dinner at the Grand Hyatt New York on June 14. Milken scholars are chosen in their senior years of high school, go through a rigorous application and interview process, and must meet a set of requirements, such as a 3.6 grade point average (GPA), a score of at least 1850 on the SAT or 28 on the ACT, and active participation in community service activities. Once chosen, the recipients are in regular communication with mentors and each other, and each summer the scholars will attend a three day summit in Los Angeles, where they will meet with Milken scholar staff and distinguished speakers to discuss issues crucial to their academic, personal and professional success. “These remarkable students have already proven they have the capacity to change the world for the better,” said Gregory Milken, the program’s director. “The Milken Scholars program provides them with the support to develop their potential and become tomorrow’s leaders.” Both Davis and Sarmad will be the first in their families to attend college. Sarmad and Kong will attend Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education for primary care and pediatrics, respectively. Shanelle-Davis NY-Milken-Scholars
