Sullivan Bishop Joseph M. Sullivan passed away on June 7 after being critically injured in a three-car collision on the Long Island Expressway the previous week. He was 83. Sullivan was born on March 23, 1930 in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, one of 11 children of the late Thomas and Margaret Sullivan “He was an outstanding priest,” said Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio. Sullivan, who was known around the world as an advocate for the poor and downtrodden, dedicated himself to charity work. In his almost 60 years with the Roman Catholic Church, Sullivan held a great number of positions and served on many boards and committees geared towards charity and public welfare. Ordained in 1956, Sullivan served as the executive director for Catholic Charities, chair of the Catholic Medical Center of Brooklyn and Queens and chair of the Social Development and World Peace Department of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. He held a number of other influential positions that made him an asset to the Catholic Church and the communities he served. In 1980, Pope John Paul II named Sullivan and two other Brooklyn priests Auxiliary Bishops. Sullivan said he wanted to “reclaim the meaning of charity.” He is survived by sisters Betty, Dolly and Fran and brothers John, Pete and Ralph as well as over 100 nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Funeral arrangements were handled by McLaughlin & Sons Funeral Home. A funeral mass was held at the Church of St. Ephrem in Brooklyn. Interment was at St. John’s Cemetery. William N. Shepard William N. Shepard, husband of Pat Thompson, passed away on June 9. Services were handled by the Owens Funeral Home, Inc. in Manhattan and a funeral Mass was held at the Canaan Baptist Church.
