The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships with approximately 1.5 million high school student entrants each year. Ms. Louder is among commended students in the top 5 percent of the 1.5 million students who took the PSAT last October. Letters of Commendation recognize outstanding academic CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK promise. Although commended students do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, some become candidates for special scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses as a result of this recognition. Students who receive this distinction “have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” remarked a spokesperson for the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
