FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.qns.com JANUARY 21, 2016 • The Quens Courier 23 Not the first snow job for Queens Mayor de Blasio was haunted by the ghost of former Mayor John Lindsay this week as the city’s response to the blizzard was woefully lacking in Queens, especially in western and central Queens, as compared to the rest of the city. But unlike the 1969 nor’easter that paralyzed the borough during Lindsay’s administration, this storm’s lack of adequate attention was oddly confined to core neighborhoods in Queens Queens Politics & More BY MIKE FRICCHIONE and small snippets of Brooklyn. Furthermore, criticism of the mayor’s handling of the snow storm came almost exclusively from local elected officials in Queens. Topping the list with the most pointed comments from the City Council was Eric Ulrich of Howard Beach, who said de Blasio’s administration “failed,” and Rory Lancman of Fresh Meadows, who blamed the poor response in his district on “a lack of competence.” Even the mayor admitted on Monday during his visit to Queens that more needed to be done. But Queens residents already knew that. What they don’t understand is why they always play second fiddle to the rest of the city when it comes to snow removal. And they are rightfully frustrated that many of their streets remained impassible two days after the snowstorm ended, while streets in Manhattan were cleared before the storm was even over. Again, Councilman Lancman may have had the best explanation for what occurred when he said, “once you screw up a storm, it’s hard to recover.” And that’s the truth. Once the city starts overlooking certain neighborhoods or certain streets, intentionally or not, it becomes exponentially tougher to later plow those areas as snow becomes more packed and turns into ice. The problem for Queens’ natives is that we’ve come to expect secondrate service from the city, and deep down know it’ll never be as good as in Manhattan. We tacitly accept this and know this every time there’s a snowstorm, and that’s sad. We make up for it, however, in our ability and willingness to call out whoever the power occupying the mayor’s office is. We’re not shy. We can’t be. We roundly booed Lindsay in 1969 and that tradition has held true and firm over the decades. Whether it was the Billionaire Bloomberg during the Blizzard of 2010 or 2016 under the proclaimed mayor of the people, we always call it the way we see it.
