TWA Back At JFK
STORY BY VICKI MAZEL
OPhoto courtesy of Vicki Mazel n Monday, September 24,
community board members,
including Ms. Felice
Hannah, city council members and
Queens Borough President Melinda
Katz, were invited to a guided tour
of the new TWA Hotel at JFK Airport.
The recent renovation of the
TWA terminal, converting it into a
hotel spans more than six acres and
evokes admiration for its awesome
design combined with nostalgia and
technology.
Blending the old with the new,
the guide pointed to the speakers
clock in the lobby as original from
the old TWA terminal. Signboards
with flight information were also
brought into the new hotel facility
from another era to now adorn “the
largest lobby in the world.” Eames
seating has been preserved from
the old terminal, refurbished and
reupholstered and will be utilized
in the new hotel as well.
Boasting approximately 512
rooms, the construction has given
work to hundreds of people. The
site will now boast not only hotel
rooms, but also corporate meeting
rooms, several ballrooms with
catering facilities, and numerous
restaurants and bars. The guide
mentioned the ballrooms will be
available for weddings and Bar
Mitzvahs, with the guests having
the convenience of staying overnight
at the hotel.
Another interesting feature in the
works is the pending arrival of an
old model airplane, which will be
motored to the airport. The plane
will act as statuary at one of the
outside areas of the hotel. Retail
space will be onsite and Air-Train
service to Jamaica will be available
to guests. Food halls and vendors
will add to the services of the
facility.
It was noted by the guide the TWA
Terminal was built during a time
of optimism: JFK was President,
the Beatles appeared with a new
Vickl Mazel (second from left) and NST Board Member Felice Hannah (far
right) stand with vintage TWA air terminal reps
kind of music, and air traffic was
growing by leaps and bounds. Now,
with thousands of pounds of new
concrete, Hotel TWA emerges from
this historic site to serve a new purpose,
a new clientele and a new era.
