12 North Shore Towers Courier n November 2015 “SOLE” MATES NST puts its best foot forward in the fight against breast cancer BY STEPHEN VRATTOS Nearly 100 North Shore Towers residents, friends and family packed the Country Club reception area to participate in the inaugural NST Walk the Course to benefit Breast Cancer research on Sunday, October 18 at 3:00 pm. Balloons and other decorations festooned the entrance and adjoining room, generously provided and put up by Country Club Manager Mary Anne Langone and her wonderful crew. Many participants donned pink in recognition of the event, and spirits were high, though the temperature was low—Mother Nature finally waking up to the season. Still, no amount of cold weather could damper the excitement and positive vibes that permeated the air surrounding the group doing their part to help the fight against breast cancer. A member of the GAP committee, Sandy Lorber, made a suggestion, which was embraced by all, and soon the “Walk the Course for Breast Cancer Awareness” was in the works, spearheaded by the committee. Phyllis Goldstein and Mary Anne Langone brainstormed and strategized the best way to conduct the event and were able to engage others to make the Walk work! Interested participants were asked to donate $10 as they signed up at the Country Club reception desk. Each donor received a pink ribbon sticker and encouraged to adhere it to an event board sitting on an easel outside the Club’s entrance. Days before the event, the board was overflowing with ribbons, with donations collected from both intended walkers and those simply wanting to contribute to the cause. Even the morning of the event, donations were still being collected. Photos by Stephen Vrattos and Julie Weissman Heigh-ho, heigh-ho… Chilly but happy finish
