BP candidate tours Towers BY MAGGIE HAYES Aurelio “Tony” Arcabascio, the Republican candidate for Borough President, has been hitting the campaign trail hard, with no sleep until Election Day. He stopped at the Towers for a Town Hall meeting last month to keep his “momentum” going and get more familiar with the “great people at the North Shore Towers.” “It’s important for people to actually talk to the people they elect,” he said. “You have to let people have access to you.” “You can’t just show up when you want their votes,” he continued. “You need to show up every day, when they want you to.” If elected, he hopes to publicize Queens’ “great resources” and make the borough a place where businesses want to be. “Although Manhattan is nice, Queens is convenient,” he said. Arcabascio had small business beginnings, and had a technology company for 34 years. Now, he is a program manager at North Shore- LIJ. His immigrant parents were both union workers, and he said he is a representation of the people of Queens. “You’re my boss, it’s important for me to always keep that perspective,” he said. “Your opinions and your concerns and your priorities are my opinions and my concerns and my priorities.” Despite his lack of political experience, he said he just “needs to be someone who champions the cause and has personality.” “If things aren’t getting done, you just need to make a change. You don’t have to be a legislator, you don’t have to be a lawyer,” he said. “You should just love the borough of Queens, you should love representing the people and getting things done.” Regarding NST’s ongoing issues with outside transportation, Arcabascio said you need to know the right people to talk to and get the problem solved. “You need someone in the capacity that has business experience in these issues,” he said. “Someone who knows the proper steps to present a valid case.” He offered going to the MTA with all of the Towers requirements, and if the MTA can’t accommodate them, then suggesting they subsidize a private transportation company to tackle the task. “They like to make money, and they like making people happy,” he said. “I’m a complainer. When you’re speaking for 2.3 million people, you need a loud voice.” Arcabascio has a long-term experience in health care, due to his time at North Shore-LIJ, as well as with the senior population, due to both his elderly mother and siblings. Additionally, his father-in-law was the Deputy Commissioner for the Department for the Aging. Despite being a Republican, Arcabascio doesn’t see himself in such a conservative light. Although he is a fan of smaller government and lower taxes, he said, “I don’t agree with everything, but I grew up with three siblings, raised by the same parents and I don’t agree with them on everything.” The North Shore Towers has also experienced trouble because it is the “last to get plowed” and the “first to get flooded,” said one resident. “We’re the last block in the county of Queens. We get neglected,” they said. Arcabascio said he first wants to convey to the borough that NST is not Long Island, and put it more prominently on the map. “People sense that I care, and people know that I care,” he said. 26 North Shore Towers Courier n November 2013 Charles H.
