TWOFERS FROM THE CINEMA
CLUB
The August 26 meeting of the
Cinema Club focused on two
documentaries instead of one narrative
film. Using "Pavarotti" and
"Maiden" as subjects, reviewer Vick
Mazel pointed out the essential
elements of this film style that rely
on archival film footage and live
interviews, two techniques to keep
audiences grounded and create
authenticity.
Whether at an opera house with
“Pavarotti” or on the high seas with
"Maiden," it was pointed out that
the elements of film editing are
most challenging in developing
documentary fluidity. An ultimate
training ground for filmmakers,
examples of these techniques
were pointed out by audience
members as well. Dr. Nurit Israeli
explored the psychological basis
of the characters in both films and
provided professional insight into
the circumstances surrounding the
families and social issues of the day.
The next film up for discussion
will be "The Farewell.” Don't forget
to check out all the new films
coming in. When in doubt–go to
a flick. We are fortunate to have
this theater on our premises, and all
residents are encouraged to go as
often as possible. Lights! Camera!
Action!

A full house of Women's
Club members filled the
VIP Room on Wednesday
night, September 16, to
celebrate International
Night. The country selected
this year was Italy, and
everything from the color
scheme, the centerpieces
and the buffet selections
paid tribute to our
Mediterranean cousins.
President Bobby
Gould's introductory remarks summarized
the club's achievements and
opened the roster for the departing
Florida residents to partake of club
activities down south this winter.
Program chairwoman Gloria Beck
spoke of upcoming events with speakers,
workshops, trips and luncheons
all in the planning. Vicki Mazel performed
a "rap" listing all the members
of the Steering Committee in rhyme.
Some North Shore dignitaries from
present and past boards also attended.
Put International Night on your
to-do list for next year. It's a great way
to travel!
