North Shore Towers 40th Annual UJA Gala
We Ate…We Danced…We Laughed…We Cried
BY SUSAN BARTELSTONE
CPhotos by Julie Weissman elebrating Our Jewish
Future!, the highly anticipated
40th Annual
UJA-Federation of NY Fundraising
dinner, took place on August
25 and honored three outstanding
North Shore Towers residents: Dr.
Stanley Goldsmith, Shirley Wershba
and Judy Lev. The gala aised
money for Camp Kehilla, which
provides physically or developmentally
challenged children of
all races and religions a safe, fun
place to spend the summer—just
like any other kid.
Nearly 150 friends and relatives
of the honorees and other NST
residents ate wonderful kosher
food, danced to a DJ and listened
to inspiring music provided by
Cantor Yosef Karavani from the Old
Westbury Hebrew Congregation.
We laughed at guest speaker
Shahar Azani’s engrossing stories
about his diplomatic service and listened
soberly to his chilling insights
on growing worldwide anti-Semitism.
Talk about our Jewish future!
Finally, we teared up listening to
parent advocate Crisolina Alvarez
talk about her 9-year old daughter
Adriana, who’s spent several summers
at Camp Kehilla. She spoke
so gratefully about the wonderful
camp experience that has enriched
her child’s life so much and thanked
Camp Directors Joe and Christine
Manzione profusely for their caring
and commitment.
So far, the NST-UJA bash has
raised almost $60,000 to help
people in need, respond to crisis
and shape our Jewish future in
New York, in Israel, and around
the world. Close to $11,300 will go
to the Camp Kehila Mitzvah project…
but there’s a new swimming
pool we can help with and other
facilities that could be updated if
we can do just a little bit more.
Be'ezrat hashem, we just know
we can!
Be a mensch!
Do a mitzvah!
