North Shore Towers Courier n October 2016 7 5 6 World Trade Center September 11, 2001 They said it couldn’t happen, but it did. From what went on elsewhere, we hid. When bombs destroyed houses, roads, consulates and someone else’s child we rebuked them in a tone ever so mild. We didn’t want to offend, because they have the oil. We trained their pilots and soldiers thinking they would be loyal. When they spoke of “JIHAD” nobody knew what they meant. Perhaps they just wanted another palace to rent. But they wanted to “stick it” to us, so that we would always know, as we counted our dead, that they were a formidable foe. A place now, so full of sorrow and pride For police, firefighters, EMS workers and volunteers who worked side-by-side. And mourning the men and women who went so innocently to work, Hoping the market would go up and the coffee would perk. To say “Goodbye” to their families, they never had a chance. No warning was given to them any time in advance. What comfort to the mourners can we give except that terror cannot destroy us and Manhattan will continue to live? —Annette Maurer I wrote this poem in shock and disbelief the day after the attack on the World Trade Center. Annette has lived in Building #2 at North Shore Towers for six years. She’s been doing volunteer work for veterans for more than a decade and is a member of the Knitting and Crochet Club. 7 1.
