46 North Shore Towers Courier n October 2016 STORY AND PHOTOS BY LEO TUJAK On Sunday, July 24th, the Tennis Association went to the Broad Hollow Theater in Elmont to see Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes.” More than 25 people attended and enjoyed the local theater’s revival of the show, followed by a sumptuous dinner at nearby King Umberto’s, where we were treated like royalty, had entertaining waiters, and the food was quite good. A twilight evening of tennis was held on Monday, August 8th. More than two dozen members showed up to play and mingle, after which we were treated to a wine, cheese and music interlude with music, supplied by our own Fred Waxenberg, aka “Sax Appeal.” Tuesday, August 10th, was the date of our Men’s Doubles event. Tennis Pro Rick Bates, ably assisted by Assistant Tennis Pro Mel explained the rules and oversaw the matches. It was four serves per person—a possible total team score of 18 points— with teams advancing as they played. After at least six rounds, we got down to the semi finals, then the finals. This season’s winners were Barney Masnick and Len Santner, and we offer them our congratulations. The Women’s Doubles tournament occurred on Wednesday, August 11th, again set up and overseen by Pro Rick Bates and Assistant Pro Mel. Although the field was smaller, the play was just as spirited. Again, best accrued points led to the finals. And the first place winners were Gerry Rubin and Jane Kremenitzer. Congratulations to them on a job well done. On Sunday, August 21st, the Meadows Cup, our annual tournament for the trophy, was played. Each team consisted of ten members: five men and five women each. First team to forty would win with no additional play. NST’s men’s team consisted of Len Santner, Barney Masnick, Mark Eisenstein, David Paris and Allen Krieger. The ladies’ team featured Annelies Karp, Carol Meyerson, Joan Gleischer, Jane Kremenitzer and Gerry Rubin. At the end of eight rounds— men’s doubles, ladies’ doubles and mixed doubles—it is with sadness that I must announce Meadow Pointe as the champion, winning by four points, their second win in this competition. We look forward to next year’s tourney and a chance to regain the cup. Better luck next year! Our Pro-Am was held on Thursday, August 25th. Three pros from other country clubs came and joined Rick in giving us some basic lessons. We would like to thank Dennis, Ed and Steve, and our course, our own Rick. We “learned’” some volleying, serving and lobbing techniques, and it should make us all better players. We look forward to these events, and again would like to thank everyone involved. A mixed doubles Labor Day Tournament was played on Sunday, September 4th. Two rounds of to seven were played; then a round of two serves each, which then progressed to the finals. In third place were Ted Schoenhaus and Carol Meyerson. Gerry Rubin and Al Weiss took second and the winners were Harris Pinsky and yours truly, Leo Tujak. Following the tournament was a BBQ, which was ultimately held in the Country Club’s Men’s Card Room due to the uncertainty of an impending hurricane/storm. More than 50 of us turned out to enjoy a nice lunch catered by our own VIP Room’s Riena and Dennis. We would like to thank the staff for all their assistance in these endeavors. Looking forward to our closing dinner at the Swan Club on Thursday, October 6th… 1 2 3 4 1. Men’s doubles winners Len Santner and Barney Masnick 2.
