42 North Shore Towers Courier n October 2015 Greetings GreetingsGreetings Greetings Kremenitzer with instructor Don BY DR. JANET PICKARD KREMENITZER A year ago I had no idea of what the term “Reformer” meant. If I were to guess I probably would say that it had something to do with a juvenile delinquent correctional institution. When I went to the demonstration forum inside the aerobics studio I was saw two bed-like platforms with springs, pulleys, and ropes and learned that the term actually refers to an apparatus developed by Joseph Pilates to help an individual develop better health and fitness and that it is related to his more known method of mat pilates. Joseph Pilates was born in 1880 in Germany as a sickly and frail child who spent the rest of his life helping others develop Photos by Julie Weissman from the GAP Janet a strong mind with a strong corebased body. The adage “Necessity is the Mother of Invention” is something that applied to his success as a leader in the fitness world based on his innovative methodology to improve the health and wellbeing of his clients. His reputation came to be embraced by dance professionals (George Balanchine, Martha Graham), Olympic athletes, and professional athletes of every denomination because of his techniques that were both proactive and rehabilitative. Hollywood stars in the 1970’s caught on to his concept of developing a strong “core” that is necessary for good movement in every phase of daily life. So my conclusion was that this is not a fad or flavor of the month but a methodology that has been highly successful for “people in the know” for more than 100 years. North Shore Towers is an amazing and vital community with an outstanding gym and a multitude of fitness classes and now we have been introduced to what can be seen as the pinnacle of them all, the Pilates Reformer. While Ponce de Leon never did quite find the Fountain of Youth (he did find Florida, which makes sense to our NST fitness-craving community), we have perhaps found something even better. The Reformer is for every BODY—pun intended! You will have an opportunity to see a demonstration of the Pilates Reformer on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 12:30 in the aerobics room. JOIN US! HOW DO I BOOK A TIME? The booking window opens every Thursday at 5 p.m. for the coming week. This will allow you to register (either in person at the Country Club Front Desk or by phone, 718- 428-5030) for the following Monday through Sunday. Limit is one slot per member per week. Due to the fact that at the present time we only have 4 Reformers, class size is limited to only 4 people per session. You may sign up on a wait list for a second slot. However, if that slot becomes available and you wish to take the class, a fee of 10.00 will be charged.
