NST KNITTING & CROCHET CLUB
BY KAREN PERRY
As we all know, the social, club
and athletic facilities of North
Shore Towers have been closed
and shuttered for months. They are all
victims of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“I haven’t played Mah Jongg or
Canasta in so long, I don’t think I’ll
remember how to play.” “We all miss
those great programs in the V.I.P.
Room. Now at night we alphabetize
our spice cabinets or inventory our
freezers.” “If those gyms do not open
soon, my temporary ‘quarantine 15’ are
going to be on there for good.”
Of all the clubs and activities at
North Shore Towers, there is one
indomitable group that has said “No”
to the pandemic and has continued
on for the past months, with business
as usual. That club is our Knit and
Crochet Club. As far as club members
are concerned, some beat the boredom
of the virus by carrying on their indi-vidual
craft projects at home. At “NST
turned Concord,” residents sit on the
lawn in circles of colorful beach chairs.
Knits Indomitable
It is a strong possibility that one or
two of each circle are members of the
club, chatting away without dropping a
stitch. When asked about the no-non-sense
dedication of her club members,
President Judi Ross explains, “The dire
needs of the charities we serve do not
stop, so how can we stop fulfilling
those needs?”
Do not think that the tone of the
Knit and Crochet Club is all work and
no play. The quarantine months have
also seen the production of a highly
imaginative, whimsical “Cycle of Life”
series of windows. This rare example
of creative ingenuity, coupled with
technical expertise, is the brainchild
of Carol Klinger. So far, our residents
have had the pleasure of viewing three
of the four windows.
The “Cycle of Life” windows began
with “The Wedding.” It contains every
member of a formal wedding party
from the bridesmaids to the maid of
honor, the bride and groom and the
rabbi. All are dressed in elegant, hand-made
attire all produced by Carol. As
if detailed dresses were not enough,
they were given the finishing touches
of coordinated handmade hats and
bouquets. The joyful scene takes
place under a beautiful needlepoint
chuppah, again handmade by Carol.
To complete the credits, it must be said
that grandchildren of our residents
provided the dolls.
Next in the cycle, it is one year
later. Our bride and groom are now
proud parents. The scene finds them
out for a walk pushing baby and
carriage in the park on a beautiful,
sunny day. Helping to create the sun
drenched scene is a beautiful land-scape
backdrop painted by artist and
resident Irene Frank.
The third window takes more than a
bit of creative license. Our young par-ents
are young no more. They are now
the middle-aged parents of a confident
young woman, going off to college for
the first time. It is a bittersweet moment
for all.
Do you like to wager? Can you pre-dict
what the theme and content of the
fourth and final window in the Knit and
Crochet Club’s “Cycle of Life” will be?
