Players approaching the 8th
Tee on Saturday morning,
August 19, were greeted
by an umbrella-shaded table,
around which sat the Land on
the Green committee, Ladies Golf
Association President Judy Lev,
Committee Chair Marilyn Salman
and Louise Carmiciano. Catching
rays was not on the intrepid troika’s
docket. Their mission was to
enlist the aid of the day’s golfing
Good Samaritans with chances to
the annual Land on the Green raffle,
which benefits the American
Cancer Society. The event, held at
Country Clubs across Long Island,
is part of Babes & Guys, which
was held at North Shore Towers
in July (see last month’s cover
story). For a scant ten simoleons,
players attempted to hit the 8th
Hole green from the tee, with a
single swing of their clubs, for a
chance to win one of four prizes.
Those paying twenty dollars
were automatically entered, paying
a premium to ensure a chance,
regardless of the outcome of their
tee-off. As expected, most opted
for the latter, not so much because
they doubted their golfing skills,
but more so to contribute to winning
the battle against cancer.
Each of the first three winners
receive golf outing for
themselves and three friends
at four of the area’s premier
courses, such as those at the
Glen Oaks, Brookville and
Hempstead Country Clubs. One
Honorable Mention recipient
will receive His & Hers Travel
Bags. Last year’s second prize
winner, Board President Mario
Carmiciano was among the first
on Saturday to grab a chance at
this year’s prizes, along with fellow
Board Member and Treasurer
Steve Redlich, Harry Greenberg
and Richard Slavin. Among the
others vying for this year’s prizes
were Men’s Golf Association
President Stan Yoel, Tournament
Director Eugene Price and Tim
Pritchard, Runner-Up in last
year’s Men’s Golf Championship
at North Shore Towers.
The Drawing will be held in
October.
