How Do People Meet at North Shore Towers?
BY BUD BANK
OPhoto courtesy of Bud Bank ne day, as I do every day,
I walked the Arcade from
Building #1 to Building
#3. One Thursday, I saw four ladies
playing cards in the Coleridge
Lounge. I said “Hello” and asked
them what they were playing.
“Bridge,” they replied. Then one
asked me if I played, and I said yes.
When one of the ladies got up to use
the restroom, the others invited me
to take her place. That was a year
and a half ago. We now play three
to four days a week.
Let me introduce my new good
friend, Adele Hoffman, who sits
next to me at the Bridge table. Adele
is 99-years-old. She’s lived in North
Shore Towers for twenty-six years.
Her late husband was a lawyer who
had a seat on the New York City
stock exchange. They were married
for 37 years.
Adele has two daughters, one is
a school teacher, whose husband
is a lawyer in Pennsylvania. The
other daughter, a lawyer, lives in
Manhattan with her husband, who
is also a lawyer. I met them both—
terrific people. I asked Adele, if I
should ever need a lawyer, could
I call them. She replied I couldn’t
afford them.
The lady who sits next to Adele
at the Bridge table is Phoebe
Greenbaum. She’s lived in North
Shore Towers for five years. She
is a retired New York State judge
and her husband, Bernard, is a
retired New York City judge, who
served for thirty years. They’ve
been married 65 years and have 2
children and a granddaughter who
is a doctor.
Our fourth at the Bridge table is a
lovely lady, Ann Eichler. She’s lived
in North Shore Towers for 5 years.
Ann was married for 70 years. She
is a retired New York City English
teacher who has a son and daughter.
These fine ladies have become
my good friends. They call me “The
Kid,” because of our age difference.
As for me, I’ve been living in
North Shore Towers for the past
5 years. I worked as an account
executive for a prestigious company
in NYC for 28 years. Then,
I retired… or so I thought, until
I was asked if I would work on a
special project part-time. That was
10 years ago, and I’m still working.
I was married 32 years before my
wife passed away. I have 3 children
and 5 grandchildren and a girlfriend
who is my best friend. She does not
live in North Shore Towers.
If you’re looking to make friends
do what I do. Just say “Hello” in the
Arcade stores and restaurants, and
you will enjoy new friends in North
Shore Towers.
Good luck!
