tally did not include the Tennis
Association’s Potluck dinner,
August’s Closest to the Green
contest, the popular Shop ’Til You
Drop on Thursday, September 6,
and inaugural Herb Greenberg
Memorial Golf Tournament on
Sunday, September 16.
The day of the event was spectacular.
As if knowing the import
of the day, Mother Nature washed
the greens with evening showers
and served up a brilliantly sunny
morning, which was dry, cool and
breezy. The golfers hit the course
at 9 a.m., teams of four playing
either the front or back 9 holes to
maximize play in the few hours
before the 12:30 p.m. luncheon.
Each end of the course included
Longest Drive and Closest-to-the-
Pin contests, both opportunities for
individuals to shine.
Meanwhile, card and Mah-Jongg
players descended on the large
lower-level card room in record
droves, nearly filling the grand
room, including the mezzanine
level on the far right. The feeling
of fun and camaraderie was palpable
upon entering the room. A
refreshment station was set up, with
pastries, coffee and tea, and the
players even had their own exclusive
raffle, for which Chairman Lev
donated 20 manicures. “This is the
greatest turnout we’ve ever had,”
said Babes Card Chair Gerry Rubin,
who oversaw last year’s gamesters.
“It was a lot of work. Thank God,
we did it!”
Whilst the putters putted and
the card players played, Country
Club Manager and Assistant Jessica
Buffolino worked their magic in
Towers on the Green. When the
dust settled, the room was asplash
with pinks, reds and white, a dazzling
display bathed in the glow
of Buffy’s new crystal chandelier.
The American Cancer Society gifted
each participant, a deep pink
over-the-shoulder bag for the ladies
and silver Swiss Army Knife for
the men.
There were 240 diners at the luncheon,
their tables extending into
the bar area, which also featured a
long table covered in raffle prizes.
When the doors opened, attendees
were greeted with a delicious buffet
of fresh green salad fix-ins, chicken
and tuna salad, bread pudding,
eggplant rollatini, penne à la vodka
and turkey carving stations.
After the eats, Lev took a
moment to call up her entire Babes
& Guys Committee, thanking each
and lauding their individual performances,
before stressing how
important they were in achieving
such success. Then it was time for
Golf Pro Bob Guido and Assistant
John Morrison to announce the
team champions and winners of
the individual events (see sidebar).
Throughout the meal and
announcements, Committee
Members worked the room, selling
additional raffle tickets, which were
also available leading into the day
and during golf and card play. The
site of the grand table festooned
with prizes with the listing of each
inside the program had participants
champing at the bit. Thousands
of dollars’ worth of prizes, more
than in 2017, were up for grabs—37
chances in all. Plus, a 50/50 cash
drawing, which was drawn at the
very end.
After the days “receipts” were
tallied, Lev’s optimism proved prophetic,
with a total take of $53,623.
With the income from the aforementioned
additional upcoming
events in August and September,
another record-breaking year is
assured.
“People asked me last year, ‘How
did we raise $50,000,’” Lev recounted,
as if to suggest she had the help
of corporate benefactors. “Because
the North Shore Towers community
came together with donations, card
playing, playing golf… WE did it!”
