Girls,” the absorbing debut
novel by Jennifer S. Brown.
Set in New York City’s
Jewish immigrant community
in 1935, as women in America
strive for the right to work, vote, and
lead independent lives, this dazzling debut novel
follows the life of Dottie Krasinsky. The epitome of
the modern girl, Dottie, a bookkeeper in Midtown
Manhattan, struggles with her position in modern
society while still being a “nice Jewish girl” and dutiful
daughter to her Yiddish-speaking parents, with whom
she lives on the Lower East Side.
