6 North Shore Towers Courier n June 2014 Fixing Tax Policy on Co-ops and a Trip to Belmont BY Al FUCHS President North Shore Towers Men’s Club The Men’s Club meeting on May 8 was well attended by about 75 members and guests. Our speaker for the evening was Bob Friedrich, President of the Glen Oaks Co-op Board and President of the Queens Co-op Association. He held his audience in rapt attention as he pointed out the inequities in the way New York City taxes private homes versus Co-ops and Condos. The city does not recognize us as individual home owners.  Many of us do not realize that about 40% of our maintenance represents real estate taxes. It is the single most important factor that affects the financial viability of co-ops. The Queens Co-op Association is in the forefront of trying to correct these inequities with our city government. We do represent a sizable population and we vote. On a lighter note, the Men’s Club is growing stronger. Floral Park may not be Capistrano but, now that the “Snow Birds” are back, we’ve reached almost 100 members. Many events are planned and are being planned for the unpcoming months. Among them are a halfday fishing trip; a day at Belmont Park May 29 (if you’re interested call Arnold Gilbert at 349-408- 4695); a behind-the-scenes trip to Yankee Stadium; a Cyclones baseball game July 24 preceded by dinner at Gargiuolo’s (if you’re interested call Jerry Gilbert at 718-352-1650); a trip to West Point; a visit to the Prospect Park Zoo as well as a dinner (guests are invited); and a summer barbeque. We are also planning a Talent Night. If you can play a musical instrument, sing, dance, act or even do standup comedy and would like to participate, please call Bud Bank at 347-502-7365. The speaker at our next meeting, June 12, will be Lou Uchitelle, former editor of The New York Times Sunday Business Section. Lou now writes on economicss, domestic and global, for the Times and other publications. In his long career, he has also been the Associated Press bswureau chief in the Caribbean and Buenos Aires.  But Lou has chosen a topic for us that is much closer to home: the impact of the de Blasio Administration on the economy of New York City. It should make for an interesting discussion afterwards. If you have any questions, please contact me at afuchs@aol.com. If you would like to join us, please call our Treasurer, Leo Tujak, at leotxrx@gmail .com.
