Women’s Club Happenings 34 North Shore Towers Courier n March 2016 Women’s Club Swings into Spring BY VICKI MAZEL Another successful program! On February 17th, Physical Therapist Yuliya Davidova discussed how to counteract the effects of aging. As an expert on treating pain, she cited the differences between the acute and chronic forms and suggested using ice as well as hot showers to help alleviate the symptoms. What can be done to maintain well-being and avoid injuries? Walk, swim, stretch… basically, move it or lose it. Yuliya’s presentation was interesting, beneficial and enriching. Now there is a noticeable spring in the steps of our members. With renewed energy, we are turning to thoughts of spring, blizzards being gone and looking to warmer climes ahead. Our next program will be on March 16th at 7:30 in the downstairs card room. Liz Ropers, noted educator, will speak on “The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire.” The tragedy occurred more than 100 years ago, and many young female immigrant factory workers died due to horrendous working conditions. This signaled a call to action; unions were formed and safety issues were addressed. The evening promises to be rich with history and the stepping stones for workers’ rights that were born as a result of the tragedy, which has impacted women for decades. You don’t want to miss this informative evening. APRIL… come one, come all. We are going to take a journey to merry Olde England and peek into the underbelly of a class of society that our American pioneers knew nothing about. Shhh… the scandals were many, the intrigue was delicious and the fashions were luxurious, unless you were a kitchen maid. It’s our April 13th program, “BEYOND DOWNTON ABBEY”!!! Maggie Smith comes to NST Women’s Club through the presence of Marilyn Carminio. Once, a former assistant to notorious editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan magazine, Helen Gurley Brown, Carminio has a rich background in magazine publishing. So let’s put our ears to the wall and listen in on the English version of Peyton Place. Hoops and bustles aside, it’s going to be a great evening. See you in the downstairs card room at 7:30 p.m.… and don’t tell the butler! May and June programs are in the works and will be announced in a future edition of The Courier. Programs are open to dues paying members only. Remember: look for the yellow rose information sheet in your mailroom. Need info or questions? Call Julie Weissman at 718 423-3017.
