16 North Shore Towers Courier n March 2016 I was asked my age by a recent interviewer and I balked. My response was, “I don’t talk about two things: my age and my income.” I must say I’d sooner tell you my income before my age. Why is that? I know I’m not alone. Is it women are more sensitive to that issue than men? I’ll have to check on that, but I didn’t find out my husband’s feelings on age until we were married for a while. Depending on whom he was talking to, it varied by a few years. Eventually it was our inside joke, but I don’t know if that was typical. I feel aging can be very positive when you’re talking about antiques, wine, cheese and steaks, but that doesn’t apply to me, unless of course I meet a cannibal someplace. You know, age got a bad rap years ago when we were kids and someone would say, “Act your age!” Well what was that supposed to be? How should we have known better at that age? Perhaps we knew there was some taboo involved, because sometimes we would tease the older kids by saying, “age before beauty.” Don’t say that to me now! I craved to be the legal age to drink when in college, but I never really took advantage of that because I didn’t enjoy drinking and I still don’t. Although these days you might say I’m a “religious alcoholic,” because I do love to have sweet wine during a Passover seder. You know maybe I should have a drink now and then. It might enable me to age more gracefully without all this protest. SENIOR MOMENTS by gloria beck I don’t care when age is used to describe times in history because it’s not applicable to me—like the Golden Age, the Space Age or the Jazz Age— I could live with that. You are aware that we are now living in the Computer Age? I like that because it’s a long way from the Stone Age. Even though I wasn’t around at that time, sometimes I feel as though I was. Some books describe aging as the process of mellowing. Wait, am I mellowing or is it melting? We also live in an Age of Miracles with all the progress we’ve made in every field, especially medicine, technology and communications. We don’t have dials on the phones or party lines anymore but now we have texting. I think that’s progress. I’m not always sure. Sometimes I don’t recognize the people I’m with because I only see the tops of their heads as they text. On occasion I’ve forgotten what they look like. Listen, at the ripe old age of #% I should know better and not kvetch. I’m not aging—I like to think I’m evolving. I’m not sure yet, because I haven’t finished evolving. I would like to take the liberty of quoting someone who knew about this subject: Fred Astaire. He said, “Old age is like everything else. To make a success of it you have to start young.” Enjoy the journey! WHAT’S YOUR AGE? Sciatica Pain?
