22 North Shore Towers Courier n March 2013 BY FRED CHERNOW When the adult education art class ended recently, the residents who were leaving were heard commenting: “She has so much information at her fingertips.” “She elaborated on the DVD so well.” “Who is she? I’ve never seen her before.” Judy Tane of Building 2 has only been living in the North Shore Towers since November 2012. “We were comfortable living in New Rochelle, but were impressed with the many amenities at North Shore Towers. For example, the Adult Education program in American Art interested me and I signed up, never thinking I’d be asked to take over when the original teacher left.” She certainly was qualified: majoring in English and minoring in Art at Queens College, serving as a docent at a major art museum and JUDY TANE: Art Docent and Enthusiast immersed by marriage into a family of artists. Tane and her husband, Sol, met in the eighth grade at a school in the Bronx and have been married for over 63 years. They raised three sons in Carle Place and while there, Tane went back to school and earned a Master’s Degree in Library Science at Long Island University while Sol started an antiques and second-hand furnishings business. Tane indulged a love of performing by joining the Long Island Gilbert & Sullivan workshop and performed in a wide range of G & S operettas. After many years, a Yiddish division of the company was created and sang in many venues, both here and abroad. It was great fun, and Tane said, “Imagine singing one of the three little maids in the Mikado in a language I barely understood. Sol’s knowledge of Yiddish was a great help.” After a brief stint as a librarian at the North Bellmore Public Library, Judy became librarian at the School of the Holy Child in Westbury, where she spent 27 wonderful years. After Tane’s family re-located to Westchester County, she became a volunteer docent at the Neuberger Museum of Art at SUNY Purchase, a college devoted to the visual and performing arts. The museum was named for Roy Neuberger, an investment banker who dedicated his life to fostering the careers of American artists. His personal collection became the nucleus of the museum and contains the works of famous artists including Ben Shahn, Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Chaim Gross, David Smith, Alexander Calder and many others. The collection has grown over the years through new acquisitions funded for that purpose. Roy Neuberger died in 2010 at the age of 107. Now, Tane’s three sons are into careers of their own. Seth is an accomplished painter in Portland, Oregon; David, who lives in Larchmont, is a real estate lawyer in Manhattan and a lover of American musical theater. Joshua, the youngest, lives in Briarcliff Manor and is a parttime actor and full-time antiques and second-hand furniture dealer in Mt. Vernon. The Tanes are happy to be the grandparents of seven. Her husband continues to work part-time as a buyer and seller of second-hand home furnishings. Some of his relatives are the graphic artist and sculptor Leonard Baskin, who taught at Smith College for many years and whose work has been exhibited in museums all over the world. Another brother-in-law was Mitchell Siporin, who founded the art department at Brandeis University. Siporin was a wellregarded WPA artist whose large murals decorate the St. Louis Post Office. Concerning the Tuesday afternoon art classes, recently concluded, Judy remarked: “I’ve enjoyed meeting this wonderful group of people from various backgrounds, who are so interested in expanding their experience with art. Although our association was quite limited in time, it was extremely gratifying.” EDITOR’S NOTE: Board member Fred Chernow will be writing for the North Shore Towers C o u r i e r monthly so be sure to look for his column.
