The horrific use of an AR-15 assault rifle in the massacre of 11 people at the Tree of Life
Congregation Synagogue in Pittsburgh is yet another reminder that people should be able
to pray without fear and that these military weapons need to be taken off the streets.
I encourage our readers to contact their U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten
Gillibrand and urge them to continue to push for federal gun-control legislation.

know your support. It helps them carry the banner.
November is the Thanksgiving month to think of those less fortunate and Veterans
Day reminds us to help those who served in the military. What better time than Thanksgiving
to give back to both veterans and people in the community?
During former President George W. Bush’s visit to the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts at
LIU Post, he talked about recognizing “Acts of Kindness” as a way to give back to our communities.
That reinvigorated me to begin a series about Acts of Kindness in the Long Island Press. If you know anyone who has
shown acts of kindness — from volunteering at local charities to even something as simple as putting up the chairs every
Sunday at church — please email me at vschneps@longislandpress.com. Speaking of Acts of Kindness, stories we wrote this
month include one spotlighting the nonprofit Rock CAN Roll, which does powerful work helping the hungry on Long Island.
