BICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION
CANON USA
COMMITMENT AND COMMUNITY: LONG ISLAND STRONG
From humble beginnings as a small camera
company in Japan in 1933, Canon has emerged as
a global leader in digital imaging. The company’s
innovative products and technologies, its
outstanding service and efforts to be a good
corporate citizen have created a Canon brand
that is trusted and respected around the world.
Although Canon is a global company, Canon
U.S.A.’s roots in the United States have been on
Long Island for 50 years. Canon U.S.A. first came
to the Americas in 1955, when five employees
opened an office on Fifth Avenue in New York
City. That little office opened the door to the rapid
growth that followed as Canon’s popularity grew
throughout the Americas. Canon then moved
from Manhattan to Woodside, New York in 1968.
In 1971, Canon moved from Woodside, Queens,
to Lake Success, where the company remained
until 2013, when Canon moved to its current
home, Canon Americas Headquarters in Melville.
It took Canon more than 30 years to find a
location on Long Island that was suitable to
construct its new headquarters. The company
never gave up because they were determined
to remain on Long Island, which so many of its
employees are happy to call home.
The decision to invest in Long Island delivered
a loud message: Long Island remains a place
where companies can grow and thrive.
Long Island has changed a lot during the past 50
years and so has Canon. However, one thing that
has not changed is the company’s unwavering
commitment to Long Island and its communities.
That’s why you’ll see Canon pitching in and
doing its best to be a good neighbor. The
company is proud sponsors of the Townwide
Fund of Huntington and the Huntington Arts
Council and sponsors the popular Summer Arts
Festival in Heckscher Park in Huntington. The
company also supports the New York Marine &
Rescue Center and the amazing work they do in
rescuing and rehabilitating sea turtles and other
marine mammals. In addition, Canon employees
love to be directly involved in contributing to the
communities on Long Island. One of Canon’s
most popular activities every year is its Canon
Clean Earth Crew Event. That’s when a large
group of people, including Canon executives, the
employees, their families and friends, cleans up
local beaches and parks on Long Island. You’ll
also see a large group of Canon employees
walking the boardwalk at Jones Beach every year
to help raise funds for research to help find a
cure for breast cancer.
All of these activities and more reflect
Canon’s corporate philosophy of Kyosei: “All
people, regardless of race, religion or culture,
harmoniously living and working together into
the future.’’
Canon’s amazing employees are at the heart
of it all. The company wants to give them the
opportunity to build successful and fulfilling
careers on Long Island. In particular, Canon is
reaching out to the younger generations who
are looking for good, well-paying jobs and the
chance to stay here on Long Island where they
grew up.
The future of Long Island depends on all of the
companies doing its best to retain young talent.
Canon has established relationships with local
colleges and universities in an effort to build
a workforce that remains here. Canon has
also created a number of programs, including
mentoring, to help attract and develop young
professionals.
Canon’s rich history and growth over 80 years
result from a respect for humanity, an emphasis
on innovative technology and an enterprising
spirit. Through the years, Canon has evolved
to meet the needs of its customers and society.
Canon is always seeking to provide new
products, solutions and services to help improve
the lives of people at home and at work, with
an emphasis on good health and sustainability.
Canon focuses on innovation with an eye on
the future. Canon’s parent company in Japan,
Canon Inc., ranked third among patent holders
in the United States in 2020 and has been in the
top five for 35 consecutive years, showcasing
the company’s innovation and commitment to
R & D.
Canon’s core strengths in imaging have driven
an expansion from cameras and multifunction
office devices and printers to areas such as
commercial printing, network cameras, and
medical and industrial equipment. The company
offers cameras that are being used in space and
others that can “see’’ in the dark, office solutions
that are ideal for hybrid workplaces, and much
more.
As a company admired and respected around the
world, Canon looks forward to contributing to
global prosperity and the well-being of all people
for generations to come. For Canon U.S.A., this
effort begins at home. That’s why Canon is
strongly committed to helping build an even
brighter future for the company, employees and
communities here on Long Island, which Canon
recognizes as a great place to live, work and raise
a family. After calling Long Island home for five
decades, Canon could not be prouder to be part
of such a special place and look forward to even
greater things to come.
One of Canon’s most popular activities every year is its Canon Clean Earth Crew Event.
